Five Guys: Tustin

We had read/heard a lot about Five Guys and had high expectations. However, after reading the Yelp reviews for the new Tustin location, my expectations were lowered a bit.

Five Guys hamburger

A regular hamburger has two patties. We ordered one regular hamburger, two little hamburgers and one order of regular size fries. No drinks, and the total was $17. Now, I know Five Guys doesn’t like to be compared to In n Out, but I’m pretty sure that same meal would cost under $10 there. D and I both had our burgers “all the way” which included a handful of toppings unavailable at In n Out, including mushrooms, pickles, etc. Although I appreciated the numbered stickers put on each hamburger corresponding to the receipt, I did not appreciate how each hamburger was wrapped in foil. It made the bun too mushy, especially with all of the extra toppings. The patty feels more handmade, and it is not as salty as In n Out, which could be good or bad. k’s comment was that the fries tasted “burned”.

Overall, I say we’re sticking to In n Out, but I’m glad we tried Five Guys. Maybe if we’re ever on the East Coast, we’ll give them another try to see what all the hype is about.

Five Guys kids

Random conversation heard between k & n all weekend:

k: We’re friends, right?

n: Yeah.

k: And Daddy’s bad?

n: Yeah. Dada ba. (n’s word for “bad”).

Gyro N Kabob

Wow…July came and went. k finished up her swim lessons, and even went down the slide on her last day (didn’t think she would do it…I should have more confidence her, I guess).

I purchased a restaurant.com certificate to Gyro N Kabob in Tustin. It is part of a aging strip mall on Red Hill that is anchored by a Stater Brothers. There is a quite a variety of food there…L to R, a Korean-owned liquor store that sells homemade Korean food (bought a bag of frozen beef dumplings, will report back soon); pho restaurant ($3.99 bowls of pho on weekends), Tustin Pizza Shack; Gyro N Kabob (Afghani restaurant); Mexican bakery; Traditions (Indian restaurant).

As for Gyro N Kabob, we thought it opened at 11 a.m. on Saturday, but didn’t open until noon, so we had to kill half an hour. We started with an appetizer called bolani. It was stuffed with potato and lightly pan fried. It comes with four pieces, but the kids couldn’t wait for me to take a picture.

It was really good with the green sauce that comes in a squeeze bottle at all the tables. (The sauce went really well with the meats, as well).

Chicken kabob, reminded us of tandoori chicken.

The food was delicious, and came with a salad. The owner was very friendly with the kids and brought us out a pitcher of water so we could do our own refills, a nice touch. It was pretty empty when we were there, so hopefully it gets better business during other times of the week. It is fun to expose the kids to different types of food.

Original Pancake House; Doheny Beach

In our quest to visit all of the state parks we can with our pass, we decided to go down to Doheny Beach on Saturday. On the way down we stopped in Aliso Viejo for breakfast at Original Pancake House. We have been a couple of times before, but I think it was the first time since n was born.

With our BOGO coupon from the Entertainment Book, we ordered the Apple Pancake and Western Omelette. There was no need to order anything for the kids, because there was plenty to share.

n enjoyed the syrup a little too much.

With full stomachs, we drove down to Doheny. I don’t think I’ve been there before. There is a jetty, so the water was very calm; practically no waves. D practiced his “rough water” swimming. Did you know that swimming is his new activity now? Running has taken a backseat, at least for now.

There was a lot of interesting things to observe:

Paddleboarding

Paragliding

Horsebackriding

We were laughing because there were SO MANY people with the Tommy Bahama chairs and umbrellas from Costco. It was like everyone and their mother had one, although this picture doesn’t really illustrate my point.

Also, we happened upon a promotional event put on by Farmer John’s. They are donating $1 for every $10 spent on their products to replacing the grills at Doheny Beach. They were giving out free samples of sausage. We also received bags of Pop Chips, Clif bars, Honest Tea, and Fuze drinks. Folgers was there too, but who feels like drinking hot coffee at the beach? I think they are holding the event every other Saturday, at least through July. Fun stuff.

Hart Park & Bruxie

Today’s family field trip occurred in the city of Orange. First we went to Hart Park. D and I had checked this park out before we were married as a possible location for wedding photos (we ended up choosing the Bowers Museum). k and n practiced their softball skills. It was a much better place to practice in than our family room at home! Then we went to the other side to check out their playground equipment.

One of the items on D’s bucket list is to go on a zip line. Until then, this will have to do:

Both k and n went on it too.

Usually, if we go out to lunch around 11:30 a.m., there is never a wait. That was not the case when we went to try out Bruxie.
Bruxie
Those brave souls who are planning to open a restaurant in this economy should pay attention to this restaurant’s success. It’s hard to pinpoint what creates a restaurant’s “it” factor, but I think a hip name/tag line (“The Bold Fold”), creative concept (everything inside a waffle!), location (downtown Orange) and relatively reasonable prices are all contributing factors. We tried the Yelp! recommendations: fried chicken waffle and waffle burger, both with a side order of waffle (cute idea) fries. That was enough for all four of us. Maybe k and D could have eaten a little more, but it was probably good for them to exercise some restraint. The only problem was that there is very little parking/seating so we ended up eating in our car!

fried chicken waffle
This was the more interesting sandwich. The cole slaw and chili honey are listed as toppings, but they actually came on the side, which was thoughtful. The chicken was a little on the thin side, but D thought it went well with the waffle.

hamburger waffle
I couldn’t get a good picture of the hamburger waffle because k and n were ravenous and not in the mood to let mommy adjust the settings on her camera. This was definitely more filling and messy. The waffle fries were good, but a tad too salty and oily for my liking. Next time we’ll have to try their frozen custard.

House of Big Fish & Ice Cold Beer

For OC Restaurant Week this year, we went to House of Big Fish & Ice Cold Beer in Laguna. It is run by the same people as K’ya Bistro, so we had high expectations. Unfortunately, we made reservations for Saturday lunch, and apparently there was a parade going on. Now, it’s not fun to find parking in Laguna. Add in beautiful weather, a weekend and a parade, and it was just a disaster. We almost gave up, but fortunately, we were able to make our way to the underground parking lot (look for the blue and white “Connection” parking sign) and they validate for 1.5 hours. Plus, the guy that was there was like the friendliest parking attendant I have ever encountered.

We shared tilapia and fish & chips. The tilapia also came with a cup of clam chowder.

We were debating whether to order a kid’s meal too, but these two entrees were plenty for our entire family. (n barely counts, though, since he was mostly interested in the butter packets and fries). Surprisingly, k liked the tilapia. Who knew? The fish and chips were not greasy, but very filling. We did not parktake in the “ice cold beer” but I’ve read that this place gets pretty lively at night. Daytime was perfectly fine for kids, though.

The restaurant is on the second floor, and overlooks PCH and the ocean. k and n had fun looking down at the street.

New Year’s Traditions

Back to New Year’s, which seems oh so long ago now. On December 30th, D and I followed our tradition of going out to eat by ourselves. We do this so we can still spend December 31st with the kids. They are always memorable meals (and we spend a little more than usual). Here’s as far back as I can remember:
2006: Didn’t go out due to our ten day old baby
2007: The Fish Company
2008: The Melting Pot
2009: Agorra Churrascaria
For 2010 we went to Cham Sut Gol for lunch…AYCE Korean BBQ for $13.99!

The service was good, they changed our grill about 3-4 times, I think. We didn’t care too much for the pork belly, but the beef, chicken, spicy pork and brisket were all good. The hot tofu soup that came with it was also excellent, better than BCD in my opinion. They also serve a large salad, rice paper wrappers and radish wrappers to make your own rolls with the meat. Plus, you can ask for rice (free!) which I learned from Yelp. Finally, there is AYCE Thrifty’s ice cream at the end. Needless to say, we were stuffed at the end of the meal. (We had skipped breakfast that morning!)

On New Year’s Eve we followed another tradition that we started last year: we all slept on our IKEA Manstad sofa-bed. Actually, last year, n was still in his crib, since he was only nine months old, so this was the first year that everyone slept on the same bed.

sleepover 2
I’m not quite sure why we find this fun, but it is. Wonder how long it will be before the kids need to sleep on the floor while we sleep on the couch. We stayed up for the NY ball drop and then lights were out by 9:30!

Belacan Grill

I’ve been wanting to try Belacan Grill in Tustin, so when I saw a Groupon ($20 for $40 of food), I decided to take advantage of the deal. D’s dad grew up in Malaysia, so maybe we should take D’s parents here the next time they visit. Malaysian restaurants aren’t that common.

Roti Canai ($3)

k’s favorite. She even liked the curry dipping sauce that came on the side.

Nasi Lemak ($10)
IMG_0248
“steamed rice with coconut milk and frangrant screwpine (pandan) leaves served with anchovies, boiled egg, cucumber, vegetables, roasted peanuts and our famous beef rendang” A little too authentic for our tastes. I guess I could have known from the description that it wouldn’t be our favorite, but I was curious. The meat was kind of jerky-like. We will skip this one next time.

Char Kway Teow ($9)
IMG_0249
Kind of like pad see ew, but I think I like pad see ew better. Not bad, though.
BTW, D was underdressed, and can I just say again that I really can’t wait until November is over? (Although he did just receive a $76 donation, so that is really nice!)

Hainan Chicken ($12)
IMG_0250
D’s favorite. Personally, I can’t get over the fact that it is served at room temperature, but it tastes good with the sauces and rice.

So, it turns out that Groupons apply to the tax, but not tip, so we needed to order one more roti to go to spend our full $40. We ate it for breakfast the next day! It heats up well in the toaster oven. I also put some of the leftover chicken in the leftover curry dipping sauce and it tasted pretty good! We would have probably liked some of the more Chinese-sounding dishes better, but then what it the point of going to a Malaysian restaurant?

Play Houses @ the Spectrum

Last night we went to Irvine Spectrum to redeem our two free birthday meal coupons at Veggie Grill (sometimes it is nice having birthdays 11 days apart). It was our first time, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect. (We smuggled in a Chick Fil A sandwich for the kids, which we also received for free by posting a “My first Chick Fil A story on facebook). Anyway, the texture of the “meat” was a little off, but it tasted good, so we were happy. It is kind of expensive without a coupon, so I can’t quite recommend it.

Avoiding a Two Hour Wait

Our last night in Napa we were going to try to go to Mustard Grill (we had been for lunch before, but never for dinner). However, they don’t take reservations, and when we arrived at 4:40(!) they said there was just no way because they were booked, and the wait would be two hours! Craziness. So, we drove back towards D’s parents house to a cute neighborhood restaurant called Fume(accent on the ‘e’), which we had also been to before. I’m not sure why this restaurant isn’t more popular, except that it is kind of hidden off the highway. The service was excellent, and it is kid-friendly, even though it is still upscale. They have a kid’s menu, and the kitchen kindly split both the entree and dessert for k and n (it was plenty of food for each of them). The highlight for k and was definitely the ice cream sundae.

Note n wearing much of his entree (pasta sauce) on his shirt.

I had the cajun prawn pasta and D had the roast chicken. D put the chicken on his list. My pasta was delicious, but VERY rich…had to share it around the table.

We left just after 7:30 the next morning. From D’s parents driveway we could see several hot air balloons taking off. That is something I would like to do. Someday.

First Day in the Bay

Just returned from visiting D’s family in Napa. We left early Friday morning. Our first foodie stop was in Oakland for Bakesale Betty. We tried one fried chicken sandwich, one slushie lemonade and one strawberry shortcake. Well, 2000+ Yelp fans were not wrong! Our plan was to eat lunch in two parts, but this satisfied all of us until dinner (we did have Jamba Juice later, though).
Bakesale Betty's
As expected, the line was out the door, down the block, but the wait didn’t seem too bad. Maybe because I was being entertained by listening to the two guys behind me that struck up a conversation about the merits of using 00 flour for homemade pizza dough v. Trader Joe’s pre-made dough and thinking, “only in the Bay Area”. Plus, the people watching was pretty interesting. It’s fun to see how people express themselves through their clothing. It gets kind of boring in Orange County. Back to the food, the slaw on the sandwich was too spicy for k and n since it had a slight jalapeno kick. The lemonade was quite tart, which I like, and the shortcake was quite large, but a little on the dry side for my taste.

We then drove on to Berkeley. The last time we had been there was three years ago, so this was n’s first time. We realized that Telegraph/Sproul Plaza is not too stroller-friendly when school is in session! D bought his requisite 2010 Cal football t-shirt, because apparently he doesn’t have enough.

We stopped to watch the Women’s a capella group (can’t remember what their group is called).

We walked around campus looking for new construction, but didn’t see anything too different (later on we saw construction at the law school and West side of campus when we were driving around). However, I was struck by how much these trees have grown since we were there over ten years ago. They used to trim them so much every year and they were so bare and gnarly. Look at them now:

D is most excited by the renovation of Memorial Stadium, which is in progress.

There’s fencing all around, but we turned in just to take a quick look. Here’s hoping for a good season so D can wear his new shirt with pride.

We made it to Grandpa and Grandma’s house by around 3 p.m. and had dinner at their home. n is still difficult to travel with. k had a couple of short meltdowns, but n just doesn’t like being in the carseat and does not get tired of letting us know!
