Les Bannetons de Charonne

When I researched the available breakfast options near our Airbnb, the closest was Les Bannetons de Charonne (literally across the street). This place received mixed, and somewhat negative reviews, but I still wanted to try it due to its sheer convenience.

There seemed to be a light, but steady stream of customers, which I took as a good sign. The smell of freshly baked goods wafted into the street corner.

I attempted to use a couple of French phrases while ordering, and the older woman behind the counter smiled and said “good”!

I brought back plain, chocolate and raspberry croissants to eat for breakfast. They were so light, it did not feel like we were consuming tons of butter-haha. The prices were quite reasonable compared to specialty bakeries around here (e.g. the raspberry croissant was 1.40 euros).

There was a small learning curve, but we successfully navigated the Metro around Paris. Once we bought the Navigo Easy Passes at a station with a live attendant, it was easy to track/refill all of our passes via the app. One tip is that you only have to tap your card when entering a station, not on the way out.

Musee d’Orsay

The Musee d’Orsay was originally a train station (Gare d’Orsay) that opened in 1900. In preparation of our visit, my son read The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick. We also watched the movie Hugo, which is based on the book. The story is set in Gare d’Orsay, and it was neat to recognize parts of the building.

The sparseness of this painting made me do a double-take.
Doesn’t Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles remind you of Goodnight Moon? I did a Google search about there being a connection, but was unable to find anything that mentioned it.
Always exciting to see a Monet.

Gosselin Saint-Germain: A Great Lunch Near Musee D’Orsay

After an art-filled morning, we were ready to fill our stomachs again. I found a boulangerie called Gosselin Saint-Germain that is a quick walk (<5 minutes) from Musee d’Orsay.

Such an enticing display case!
Since there was no seating, we had an impromptu picnic next to the Seine, which was nearby.
Croque Monsieur and Emmental Ham and Raw Vegetables Sandwich were both solid.

We had a little dilemma regarding dessert because everything looked so delicious, but we also had to be careful of the kids’ nut allergies. I had a pocket-sized card explaining their allergies to the woman behind the counter, but the language barrier did not leave me feeling too confident about her suggestions. We settled on eclairs (coffee, vanilla and chocolate), and they ended up being a tasty and thankfully nut-free choice.

Pick Up Malasadas From Paderia Bakehouse

k started her first job as a scorekeeper for SEYO junior basketball games. Last week her assignment brought us to Fountain Valley High School, so I put in a small order at nearby Paderia Bakehouse. Ordering and paying online ahead of time made pick-up simple and quick.

The interior of the store is stylish and welcoming. The display case is quite enticing, and the employees are warm and friendly.

If you ever see someone bring this signature black and white Paderia box to a gathering, you are in for a real treat!

Here is what we ordered:

  • 2 Portuguese Egg Tarts ($2.75 each): Custard Tart. Crisp, individually-moulded flakey pastry with a creamy custard center & distinguished caramelized top.

These pastries were incredibly flakey and buttery. I can see why these are one of Paderia’s signature items.

  • 2 Malasadas ($2.50 each): Portuguese Doughnut. Sugar-dusted golden brown doughnut with an exceptional eggy dough.

If you have never had a malasada, you are missing out! I always associate malasadas with Hawaii. (The malasadas we ate from Tex Drive-In on The Big Island were SO tasty!) However, since it does not look like we will be making another trip to Hawaii any time soon, mainland malasadas will have to do. We tried one filled with vanilla custard and one filled with passionfruit curd. I especially enjoyed the tart passionfruit malasada because it tasted more “special”. Other flavors currently offered include nutella, coconut, and strawberry jam. I like that they wait to fill the malasadas until right before pick-up. Although Paderia has expanded to several locations, the malasadas are exclusive to the Fountain Valley location.

Visiting VaKA Burger @ Mess Hall

Visiting VaKA Burger at the Mess Hall in Tustin has been on our to-try list for a while now.

The Mess Hall has several restaurants housed together in a cool-looking building. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty. It is probably more of a lunch destination? (NOTE: VaKA Burger is closed on Sundays!)

There was plenty of seating inside, as well as outside.

We ordered at the counter. I like that the VaKA Burger menu is simple. All burgers are currently $9.99. Fries come separately, but they cost a little less if you “add” them as a side to your burger.

n ordered the VaKA Burger: Beer Batter Tempura Ring, Muenster Cheese, Bacon Jam, VaKA Signature Smoked BBQ Sauce

D & k both ordered the TRuFF Burger: Baby Rocket Arugula, New York Sharp Cheddar, White Truffle Oil, Caramelized Firestone DBA Onions, Roasted Garlic Aioli

k says she is a fan of truffles and truffle-flavored foods-who knew?

I ordered the BRiE Burger: Baby Arugula, French Brie Cheese, White Truffle Oil, Caramelized Firestone DBA Onions, Roasted Garlic Aioli.

I am usually drawn to brie at restaurants, partly because I never eat it at home.

We anxiously waited for our buzzer to let us know that our food was ready. It took a little while, but probably felt longer because we were hungry. We only added fries as a side to two of our burgers, and that was plenty for the four of us.

Here is an inside shot of my glorious burger. It was an umami explosion! The chef who made up these flavor combinations definitely knows what he is doing. Even the house-made ketchup tasted gourmet. At first I thought the burger did not look very large, but it filled me up. Everyone in my family was impressed with VaKA, and we would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Flipping Over Flippoly

A few weeks ago we had breakfast for dinner, as I wanted to try the breakfast sandwiches at Flippoly. I believe their first location was in Buena Park at The Source (another place I have on my to-visit list). However, we visited the less-glamorous, but closer outpost in Irvine.

All four of us ordered the same sandwich, something that we do not typically do: the Bulgogi BBQ. It tastes just as good as it looks!

According to the signage, this hefty sandwich contains Bulgogi BBQ (beef), Grilled Scrambled Egg, House Sauce, Brioche Loaf, Cheddar Cheese, and Parsley. Each component is well-executed: the bread is lightly toasted and cut into a nifty pocket, and scrambled eggs are fluffy, the creamy sauce has the slightest kick and the bulgogi beef just raises this breakfast sandwich to the next level.

I thought it was a good deal for $6.99. I was not able to finish mine, so I saved some for breakfast the next day. Surprisingly, it held up really well after a quick zap in the microwave!

They also offer an array of drinks (include dalgona coffee) and soft serve ice cream. D was curious about the black sea salt flavor so he asked the cashier what it tasted like. She graciously offered him a sample:

It is not very photogenic, but tasted pretty good-kind of caramel-y? I am still not sure why it is black since sea salt by itself is not black. Is it black sesame or the trendy charcoal?

It was not too crowded when we went (around 5 p.m. on a Sunday) but I heard there can be lines at more popular times during the day. Check this place out if you are in the area!

Celebrate National Seafood Month With Rubio’s!

Disclosure: I received compensation in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Did you know that October is National Seafood Month?  I cannot think of a better way to celebrate than dining at Rubio’s Coastal Grill.  Rubio’s is my family’s favorite fast-casual place to enjoy seafood.  This chain first opened in 1983 in San Diego and became famous for their award-winning Original Fish Tacos.  Rubio’s offers a wide variety of seafood offerings, including shrimp, salmon, and mahi mahi.

If you have never been to Rubio’s before, my recommendation would be to order the Coastal Trio.  This option gives you the opportunity to try three of Rubio’s most popular tacos: The Original Fish Taco®, Salsa Verde Shrimp Taco, and Wild-Caught Mahi Mahi.  I personally crave variety in flavors and textures, and this flight of tacos provides just that.

After numerous visits, I think my family has tried almost every item on the Rubio’s menu!  The fresh, high-quality ingredients that Rubio’s uses for its tacos, burritos, bowls and salads are the reason we keep returning.

Incorporating more seafood into your regular diet is a smart idea, as it is among the highest quality proteins and is a good source of vitamin D.  In addition, seafood contains all the essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source.  Ordering from Rubio’s is a delicious and easy way to increase the amount of seafood you consume!

Rubio’s Cauliflower Rice Is A New Healthy Option

Disclosure: I received compensation in order to facilitate this post.  All opinions are my own.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill is one of our family’s go-to restaurants when we are looking for a quick and healthy meal.  One of the most recent additions to Rubio’s menu is Cauliflower Rice seasoned with citrus and cilantro.

We tried Rubio’s California Bowl with Cauliflower Rice, romaine lettuce, black beans, guacamole, salsa fresca, creamy chipotle sauce, roasted chipotle sauce and salmon.  Rubio’s Cauliflower Rice has a wonderful fluffy texture and it was an excellent base for our salmon bowl.  The cauliflower flavor is subtle and is sure to appeal to most palates.

For those who are watching their carbs (or if you just want to include more veggies in your diet), Rubio’s Cauliflower Rice is a smart and delicious option.  Rubio’s Cauliflower Rice is available in any of their bowls or burritos, or as a side with their entrees and kids meals.  Give it a try the next time you visit Rubio’s!

Download The Luna Grill App Today!

Disclosure: I received compensation in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Luna Grill recently relaunched their new app, Club Luna, and I was eager to give it a try! I have high standards when it comes to restaurant apps; only the most useful ones stay on my phone.  After using the new Club Luna app to place a carryout order, I can confidently say that it is a worthwhile download!

The new Club Luna app makes ordering ahead incredibly easy and convenient.  The app allows orders to be placed for delivery, store pickup, or curbside.  When I recently placed an order on a weekday night, the food was ready within 15 minutes!  I appreciated being able to pay for my order through the app so I could walk in and grab my takeout from the carryout shelf without having to wait. We headed straight to a local outdoor concert in the park and enjoyed our delicious meal!

Another advantage of the Luna Grill app is its integration of the Club Luna Rewards program.  This rewards program allows you to earn a $10 reward for every $100 spent at Luna Grill! The app shows the rewards/offers that are in your account and makes it easy to apply them to your order.

Luna Grill’s full menu is available through their app, including their signature Mediterranean plates, bowls, salads, and family meals. There are even some menu items that are only available through the app, like the Lunatic Sampler (falafel, stuffed grape leaves, couscous medley, organic hummus and pita bread) and the Dip Trio (spicy feta, organic original hummus and spicy harrisa hummus served with veggies and pita bread).

All users receive $5 off their first app order, so be sure to download the app today at https://lunagrill.com/clubluna

Sightseeing in Seattle: Space Needle

Seattle Lunch Pick: Fresh Off The Boat Poke Bar

We had reservations for the Space Needle at 12 p.m., so we picked up lunch from Fresh Off the Boat Poke Bar on the way.

We ordered two large poke bowls, which ended up being plenty for the four of us. I like how poke bowls are so aesthetically pleasing.

We were the first ones there and no one else was in line, but the service was quite efficient to the point of being curt. As you can see, there are a lot of ingredients and toppings to choose from.

How hilarious is this choice of toilet paper in the restaurant’s bathroom? Someone actually busted out a label maker! I had to take a picture to share (after I washed my hands, of course).

We took our poke bowls to go and ate them on a bench near the Space Needle. We all agreed they were one of the best poke bowls we have consumed. The ingredients were fresh, the bowls were packed, and the flavors were on point.

Seattle Space Needle

Going to the top of the Space Needle is one of the activities D and I skipped when we visited pre-kids. I think we thought it was too pricey at the time. Looking back, I am glad that we were able to experience the Space Needle for the first time with our kids.

For this trip, we purchased City Passes, which includes admission to five different Seattle attractions. City Passes are available in several big cities, and their purpose is to save you money and time. In our case, there were no lines at any of the attractions we visited. However, I can see how having a City Pass would be helpful when it is crowded.

Once we reached the top, we were greeted with amazing 360 degree views of Seattle. It was a clear day, so there was excellent visibility.

There was a nice indoor seating area where we rested our legs and enjoyed the air conditioning. We also took advantage of the water-filling station to replenish our water bottles.

After you are done looking around the top floor, go down a flight of stairs to experience the revolving glass floor. As someone who experiences motion sickness, I could only stay for a little while before feeling dizzy.

This is also the floor where you catch the elevator down.

k wanted to see how far she could keep one foot on each side of the revolving floor.

The City Pass actually allowed us to visit the Space Needles twice in one day. The ticket said that the second trip should be after 6:00 p.m., but the ticket office said the second visit could be at any time that day since it was not crowded. Although it would have been nice to go up to the top during sunset, it would have been too late for us (since the sun did not set until around 9 p.m.!) Therefore, we made our return visit after completing our other stops for the day.

Seattle Mariners Baseball Game Experience

After we checked into our hotel, we did an initial visit to Pike Place Market. I plan on writing one long post to combine all of our visits to this Seattle landmark (3 in total!). We walked back to our hotel and rested for an hour. D had reserved four $10 tickets for us to watch the Seattle Mariners play the Oakland A’s at T-Mobile Park for our first night.

Pre-Game Dinner At Paseo

The game started at 7:10, so I had us grab dinner beforehand at Paseo. Our walk ended up being longer than I had anticipated, and the weather was unusually warm for Seattle that day (mid to upper 80’s!).

We were able to find seating in their outside patio. It took a while for our food to be ready, but we had just eaten at Pike Place, so we were not that hungry. Our order consisted of two Paseo Caribbean Roast Sandwiches, one order of Famous Roasted Corn, and one order of Caribbean Fries. Their sandwiches have been voted one of the best in the country, so I was eager to try them. Here is their description:

The Paseo Caribbean Roast is a legendary & beloved Seattle sandwich. Bursting with intense flavors, the Caribbean Roast harmonizes juicy slow roasted pulled pork, garlic aioli, fresh cilantro, crisp romaine, pickled jalapeños, & caramelized onions.

It was, indeed, a delicious sandwich. Unfortunately, we were not hungry enough to fully appreciate it. I think the roasted corn was the best I have ever had, and the garlic aioli served with the fries was excellent. It was worth the walk!

Seattle Mariners Baseball Game

After dinner, we backtracked to the baseball stadium. Good thing we did not have to pay for parking! I think that attending a baseball game is a good way to get a feel of the local atmosphere.

I did not think that we would make it in time to receive the freebie they were handing out to the first 5,000 fans–PJ pants. However, we lucked out and they still had some left. Too bad they were all size XL! I’ll have to figure out how to do some tailoring.

n couldn’t wait to try them on. D and I also showed a picture of our vaccination card and received a free SEA Us Rise t-shirt (modeled here by D and n).

Our seats in right field were up high, but perfect for viewing the sun set over the Seattle skyline. I would recommend seats in right field just for that view. There was a lot of space between fans, which was nice.

Even though I was not familiar with any of the players, the game was pretty high-scoring and exciting.

It was still light out at 9 p.m.! We ended up leaving after the 7th inning stretch after the A’s went on a run streak (Mariners lost).

We went to sleep way past our usual bedtime, but it was fun to be out on the town for one night.

Now we have night clothes to remind us of our time in Seattle. Thank you, Mariners!

Enjoy Quick and Healthy Family Meals From Luna Grill

Disclosure: I received compensation in order to facilitate this post.  All opinions are my own.

Recently, dining alfresco in our cozy backyard has become one of my favorite ways to connect as a family. I find that we feel more relaxed when we eat together outside, and that the conversation is more free-flowing.

One great option for healthy takeout that my family especially enjoys for a special meal together is Luna Grill.  Luna Grill is a Mediterranean fast-casual chain in California and Texas that serves grilled kabob plates, offers individual plates, bowls and pitas, as well as convenient Family Meals, with options that serve 4-6.

Luna Grill’s Family Meals

We recently ordered a Luna Grill Family Meal online and it was so nice to enjoy a freshly made meal that I did not have to cook!  Each Family Meal includes:

  • Your choice of kabob (Chicken, Gyro Meat, Sirloin, Veggie, Bistro Filet)
  • Salad (House, Mediterranean, Modern Greek)
  • Dip/Sauce (Tzatziki, Spicy Tzatziki, Chipotle Sauce, Hummus, Spicy Hummus, Garlic Feta Dip, Schug)
  • Pita
  • Rice

This is the Family Meal for 4, and as you can see, it includes a good amount of food.  We ordered both the chicken and sirloin kabobs, which were flavorful and tender. Each kabob is grilled fresh to order over an open flame using their special method to preserve the juices and flavor. My kids surprised themselves and said they liked the squash in the veggie kabobs!

For salads, we upgraded to the Modern Greek salad, which looked like a work of art. This salad included a rainbow of fresh vegetables and came with a tasty house vinaigrette. There was plenty of fluffy basmati rice (probably enough for 8!). Finally, it was difficult to choose a sauce since all of the options sounded delicious. However, we can definitely say the tzatziki is a winner–it complemented everything, including the pillowy pita bread. Luna Grill makes their tzatziki in house daily using yogurt, fresh mint, cucumber and more.

Luna Grill’s Family Meals are the perfect solution for your next gathering. I placed my order online and it was ready when I arrived at the restaurant. While I was there, I saw that they offer delivery so next time I’m going to give that a try! The kabobs were steaming hot and you could tell that they were grilled fresh to order. All of the food came neatly packaged and transported well. If you are looking for scratch-made food prepared with high quality ingredients, definitely check out Luna Grill.
