And it Begins…

For me, this week marks the beginning of the holiday busy season. I feel like there is so much to do. I think I feel more pressure this year to make the holiday season meaningful for k, since she is more aware and understands a whole lot more than before. It is somewhat ironic that my effort to instill meaning into the holiday season can turn into something that actually impedes the true message. We’ll just have to strive for balance, I guess.

This past Monday we intended to take the ferry to Balboa Island. However, we ended up walking on a bridge over Newport Harbor and found ourselves on the island. Magic!

We tried an “original” frozen banana from Dad’s. The applesauce donut was pretty good too. I want to try an apple cider donut at an apple orchard someday.

Yesterday we went to Le Diplomate near UC Irvine. 348 people gave it 4.5 stars on Yelp, so we had high expectations.
le diplomate
We had two 9 inch sandwiches: chicken eggplant and chicken broccoli mushroom. Pictured is only one half of one sandwich. The sandwiches come with a rich garlic suace, which definitely is a standout. At first, D scoffed at the idea of a 9 inch (he’s used to Subway footlongs), but it was quite filling. We barely finished them, and that was with k helping us. We also bought a baguette fresh out of the oven for $2 for my sister/BIL. It had a nice soft interior, with a crackly crust. We saw one girl fold one in half and stuff it in her messenger bag so she could ride off with it on her bicycle. Too funny.

It was kind of fun hanging out with all of the UCI students…we tend to forget that we live so close to a UC school. I’m kind of curious to try to the other “student favorites” around the area.

Meanwhile, n is sitting up by himself a lot more, as well as pulling himself up to standing. We have to watch him a lot more, since he is still not too steady. He’s growing up too fast!

La Habra Children’s Museum

La Habra Children’s Museum has been offering free admission on the first Saturday of the month thanks to Target. Today we were able to take advantage of the deal and visit for our first time. It was small, but cute. We went through it all in about 35 minutes, mainly because k didn’t want to do the involved activities, like playing dress up, etc.

I was getting frustrated because k didn’t immediately want to explore and look at everything like all of the other kids. I just have to remind myself that it takes her a while to warm up to things, and that is OK.

There was also a nice little playground outside. I was keeping my eye out for Octomom, since we were in La Habra, but no sightings.

Oh, and on our way there I spotted The Hat, a famous pastrami place. D’s been there with co-workers, but I had never been, so on our way back we went through the drive-thru. We ordered 1 pastrami dip sandwich and 1 order of onion rings. The bread for the sandwich is not that big, but they put a LOT of meat in it. Since I like a lower meat to bread ratio, we just added the extra meat to sandwich bread at home. So, the one sandwich filled us all up, plus we couldn’t even finish the one order of onion rings. I also noted that they gave us 20 packets of ketchup. Is that really necessary? They could cut down on their variable costs considerably by limiting their ketchup distribution.

A Detour to Diamond Jamboree

The plan was to go to stop by Joann’s for their Midnight Madness sale and then eat at a sandwich place I’ve been wanting to try. However, Joann’s was SO crowded, so it took longer than expected. We were on our way to the restaurant when just down the street we came across the Diamond Jamboree shopping center and we were lured in by its convenience. We ended up eating Bimbimbap and Japchae ($6.99 each) in Sobahn Express, located in the food court of H Mart. They both came in a hot stone bowl, and D declared it the best Korean meal he has ever eaten. OK, I guess most Koreans would take offense at that statement, but it was good.

The hot stone bowls come in heavy wooden boxes. They brought ours to the table even though it seems like they made everyone else come pick them up. Maybe because we had two little ones?

k enjoyed the food too. It wasn’t too spicy, since we didn’t add the hot sauce to her portion.

The parking lot was pretty crazy, just like everyone complains about. D said being there reminded him of Berkeley because there were so many Koreans. We’re looking forward to try the other places.

Celebrating 33 @ the Happiest Place on Earth

D turned 33 on Sat. and we celebrated as a family by going to Disneyland. D got in free for his birthday, n and k are free b/c of their age, and I used my summer pass for the second time.

k is starting to get more used to Disneyland now since she knows what to expect. What she didn’t expect was for me to encourage D to take her on the Matterhorn for the first time.

This is her face at the end of the ride. She didn’t want to ride it again with me.
🙁 Maybe next time.

k’s favorite ride is It’s a Small World. She sings the song ALL of the time, including in the grocery store.
It's A Small World

n went on many of the rides with us, including the Jungle Cruise. Sadly, we lost this hat somewhere between here and the Tiki Room.

Minnie Mouse
We caught Minnie on our way out.

At night we dropped off the kids with my dad, sis and BIL, and went out for a nice dinner at Tommy Bahama’s in Newport Beach. I picked the restaurant in part because they were participating in OC Restaurant Week. D had the prix fixe with coconut shrimp, black cod, and malted chocolate cake. I had the pulled pork sandwich, but of course, we ended up sharing everything. (It was kind of hard to go back and forth with those two dishes, though, since they were so different, taste-wise. The fish had really strong pickled asian vegetable flavors).
pork sandwich
I would’ve preferred to go for the prix fixe lunch (cheaper), but we were busy last weekend and this weekend, so dinner was the only option. The appetizer and dessert portions seemed pretty small, but the entree was a good size. Plus, we filled up on the warm sourdough rolls with cinnamon butter, so I ended up taking half of my sandwich and a lot of fries home.

Happy Birthday, D!

Bottega & BarBersQ

When we visit D’s parents or they come to visit us, where we are going to eat is always a big decision. The planning usually starts at least a few weeks before. We’ll suggest some places, D’s dad will make some suggestions, we’ll do some research, and come up with an itinerary.

For Friday lunch, D’s dad suggested Bottega. After watching Top Chef Masters, we were curious to see what Michael Chiarello could do. Even though he wasn’t the one actually preparing our food in the kitchen, of course, I was impressed. Loved the ambiance, (cute little covered outside lounge area) and the food was delicious!

I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi, salsa di pomodoro della Nonna, pecorino. Little fluffy pillows that melt in your mouth. I haven’t eaten gnocchi many times, but this dish may spoil any future gnocchi I eat.
Bottega gnocchi

D and his dad ordered Fusilli Lucani with veal, pork & porcini mushroom Bolognese, Sweet 100 tomatoes, rosemary & parmigiano. k loved the fusilli, and ended up eating off of both of their plates. She also enjoyed the special lemonade flavored with strawberry puree and sparkling water that D ordered.

Bottega is part of a shopping area that seems to be owned by Chiarello, called NapaStyle. I didn’t really get it, but I saw his face everywhere in the store next to the restaurant.

For dinner we went to BarBersQ, a place I had read about in Sunset magazine and Bon Appetit? It is located in a strip mall, but it was probably the chicest barbeque place I have ever been to.
BarbersQ 2
BarbersQ
We ordered A Taste of the Q for 2 and Baby Back Ribs & Chicken combo, a side of corn bread and creamed corn. It was plenty of food for all of us. I didn’t take a picture because we dug in so fast (the service was on the slow side, but friendly). D inquired about the cooking technique and it turns out they use a dry rub AND a light sauce. He liked the ribs and brisket the best, but everything was good with the extra bottles of sauce on the table.

All in all they were two solid picks.

Hanging Around

This is my last week before I go back to work (at home). Of course, the time went by too quickly. Sometimes I look at k and wonder how she got so big all of a sudden. n is growing quickly, too, although we haven’t made too much progress in the sleeping at night. He is in a cute stage, cooing and smiling (when he is content).

We arrived at 4:45 on Sat. and were seated right away, but by 5 p.m. there were people waiting outside. I liked how you can customize your ramen–I prefer my noodles on the firmer side while D likes his softer, and they delivered! We both put down that we wanted light oil and normal strength broth.)

Stearns Wharf

We ate at Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.. I ordered the shrimp scampi because I thought k would like the rice, but there was waay too much butter sauce. The garlicky shrimp were good, though. D had the local Santa Barbara crab, which took a long time to eat since there was so much cracking to do. D was able to get a good amount of meat, and I had my share too.

The table next to us ordered the spider crab, and the waiter brought out a live one for show and tell.

The big mess that I referred to in an earlier post happened while we were waiting for our food. I was holding n when he had a MAJOR spit-up incident. It went all over my shirt and onto my pants…it was definitely one of the worst, if not the worst he has had. Unfortunately, it occurred on the one and only long sleeve shirt that I had packed. D generously offered me his fleece the rest of the weekend while he had to wear t-shirts in the cold. I learned my lesson to pack extra clothes for myself as well as for the kids!

You can tell I’m the photographer of the family because there are no pictures of me. D only took one the whole trip of me, and my eyes are half closed. We need to work on that.

La Super Rica

We’re back from an overnighter to Santa Barbara. D extended his Memorial Day Weekend by one day so we just went from Mon.-Tues. On Monday we drove up in the morning, making a stop at the Camarillo outlets. D found some deals at Brooks Brothers while I found a couple of pairs of shoes at Nine West. It is usually very difficult for me to find shoes, so I was happy.

When we arrived in Santa Barbara, it was lunch time so our first stop was La Super Rica. This place became famous because of Julia Child’s recommendation. The atmosphere is pretty nondescript, but the prices are still very reasonable, so that’s nice. We ordered chicken and a “La Super Rica Especial”, which had pork and roasted chiles. Yes, there was too much cheese on the special for our taste, but I liked the smokiness of the chiles. We should have just ordered one of these plates and one order of tacos, because there was too much food and we couldn’t finish it. We also had a hibiscus agua fresca, which was pretty sweet. When we were half way done, D had the brilliant idea of adding water to dilute it. It tasted even better! Too bad that I put our now almost full cup in n’s stroller cup holder and forgot it was there while trying to navigate the stroller down the stair while holding the door open. The bright red juice splashed all over the door and on the stroller, but luckily not on n or myself. This wasn’t the last big mess of the trip, but you’ll have to stay tuned for that story!

5 Year Anniversary!

Hard to believe, but last Friday was our five year wedding anniversary. We celebrated by going out to dinner at Spaghettini’s on Sunday, sans kids. We chose this place because: 1. D had never been, and he was always saying he wanted to go. 2. It’s very close to my parents’ place (aka the babysitters). 3. They are having a special all April and May on Sunday nights where pastas and salads are 50% off! The waitress told us to tell everyone we know about the deal, so here you go!

I had the butternut squash ravioli and D had the seafood pasta. Mine was a little too sweet for my liking (tasted kind of like pumpkin pie). We also shared a walnut apple blue cheese salad–very tasty.

The Melting Pot on New Year’s Eve Eve

D and I decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve a little early and went out to the Melting Pot in Irvine last night. Our leisurely meal took about two hours and a quarter hours! It was the first time having fondue in a restaurant for both of us, and it was fun. I didn’t think D would enjoy cooking his own entree, but he got into it. His stopwatch actually came in handy to keep track of the recommended two minute cooking time. It was a good thing that we were able to leave k with my parents, because bubbling pots of chocolate, broth, and cheese and a two year old would not have been a good combination.
We ordered the Wisconsin Trio cheese fondue, California salad/House salad (comes with the entrees), French Quarter/Shrimp & Sirloin entrees, and Flaming Turtle chocolate fondue. We were able to pace ourselves, making sure to save room for dessert! The cheese fondue came with bread chunks, granny smith apples slices and carrots/cauliflower. Although the busboy wanted to take everything away when we were done with the cheese, I asked if we could keep the bread and apples. That was nice, because we were able to have a little more bread with our entrees (it’s hard for me to eat meat without some carbos!) and finish the apples with the chocolate.
Even though we used our Entertainment Card (1 free entree), it was a bit spendy, but it was a meal we’ll remember for a long time. We were able to discuss our goals for 2009 and reflect a little…it was nice having a nice private booth towards the back. It was also funny overhearing the couple next to us swearing at their bubbling pot of oil (one of the entree cooking options). I thought they were going to start a grease fire!
