Las Vegas: Downtown Container Park

We started off our spring road trip a little later than usual in order to pick up our free breakfast at Chick Fil A (every Monday and Tuesday in April for you OC readers!)

P1050961

It opened at 6:30 a.m. but we arrived at around 6:23.  When D pulled up to the drive thru, he triggered an alarm that said to come back when they were open–haha.

That day’s mystery item was the Egg White Grilled Chicken sandwich.  Good thing it was relatively healthy given the junky food we ate the rest of that day.

P1050969

Our first stop was the Downtown Container Park in Las Vegas.

P1050980

The Container Park is a retail space close to the Fremont Experience.  The stores are literally made from containers.

P1050968

I read that this sculpture shoots fire out of its mouth at night, which would have been cool to see.  Since the park is only open to adults at night, that would not have been possible for us.

P1050978

The main reason I wanted to visit was so that the kids could go on the slides of this cool tree house play structure.  However, the slides were closed for maintenance.  Boo!

We brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed the nice weather on the artificial turf.

The only store we really checked out was Kappa Toys.  It was a fun place to browse.

P1050977

There was a nice selection of Pusheen!

“Locks of Love”

I liked the concept of the Container Park, but without the slides, there was not much to do for the kids.  Next it was time to check into our hotel…

Legoland: Spring Break Edition

We started off our spring break by going to LEGOLAND on Monday with just the kids and me while D was at work.  We arrived before it opened and they actually let us into the park too early by accident.  Of course, the rides were not open yet anyway, and we were soon escorted back out.

We witnessed the opening ceremony where two sisters helped Kai officially open the park.

P1050936

We wanted to stay near the right side of the park so we could ride the Technocoaster and Dragon Coaster first thing.  We checked out Mini Land, which opened before other sections of the park.

Someone said this mama duck looked like Duckzilla in comparison to the Lego building, which I thought was pretty funny.

It would be so cool to see LEGOLAND Japan!

We checked out some rides and areas that we have not done before.

The longest line we stood in was about 45 minutes.  I really do not understand why they did not have all three towers in operation during spring break!  The kids liked this one, though.

We’re hoping to go to the water park in the near future.  I was not brave enough to take the kids there by myself!

Celebrating Pi Day

It seems that more and more people are becoming aware of Pi Day as pizza restaurants are publicizing it.  On March 14, Pieology offered pizzas for $3.14.  We have redeemed this offer in years past, but it was way more crowded this year.  We ended up waiting in line for two hours, which is one of the most not-so-smart things we have ever done, according to D.  However, a friend gave us a couple of unredeemed coupons, so we were able to buy four pizzas, which was enough for a few meals all together.  Also, we ended up chatting up the people next to us in line.  It turns out that the family used to live in our neighborhood, but we had never met them before!

n is 8!

P1050900

Last week we celebrated n turning 8.

P1050901

D picked out a radio control car for n.  He seemed to have ignored that it was meant for ages 14+!  It goes way too fast for indoor use, so they take it outside.

We had dinner at In-N-Out and treated n to a strawberry shake.

Strawberry seemed to be a theme, as n also requested a strawberry cake by made by my mom.

We are so thankful n and all that he adds to our family.  We appreciate his energy, creativity and thoughtfulness and pray that God would continue to guide him through all of his days.

n, The Maker, Part II

It has been a while since we have featured n’s creations.  I still see him sneaking some computer printer paper and tape every now and then.  Here are some recent ones that brought a smile to my face.

Don’t you hate when you get a new sticky hand snapper and it does not come with a container so then it gets dusty and dirty and loses its stickiness?  n’s solution was to make his own envelope to protect it–hehe.

P1050897

P1050898

He made this over-the-table pen holder so “you won’t get mad at me for having pens on the floor”.  I guess it also saves table space!

Finally, what do you do when your sister received an indoor basketball hoop that fits over the door for her birthday and you want one too?  You make your own!

P1050899

And you add your own shooting range target underneath, because, why not?

Blue & Gold Banquet

Banquet1

D took n to his second Blue and Gold Banquet.  This year there was supposed to be a dessert competition.  n and I had fun planning our cake for entry.  n made a sketch and we discussed what we would use for each component.  Unfortunately, the competition was cancelled at the last minute due to low participation.  Since we already bought all of the ingredients we decided to make it anyway.

2nd Trip to Legoland With our Annual Pass

While k had an epic sleepover with some of her basketball team, D took n to LEGOLAND last month.  Meanwhile, I was sick in bed at home. 🙁  D and n were able to meet up with another family that has passes, so that was fun.

n’s 2nd Pinewood Derby

Last year, n and D entered n’s Pinewood Derby race not really having any clue what to do.  His car ended up in the bottom half of almost all of his heats, but he did win the “most realistic car design” award.  This year, D watched some YouTube videos and enlisted the help of our brother-in-law.  n’s car ended up doing much better–4th place out of twelve cars, placing 2nd in most of the heats.  The races are always pretty close–just a few hundredths of a second makes a difference!  There’s always next year…

Derby1

n’s car was #29.  We’ll call it a “utilitarian” design-haha.  For the record, the light green car with two black stripes down the middle won first place (for the second year in a row!)

The boys (and dads) really get into it.

Knott’s Scream for the Cure

Knotts1

Earlier this month I won a blog contest where D and I were able to go to Knott’s Berry Farm before it opened.  Susan G. Komen is partnering with Knott’s Berry Farm to “Scream for a Cure” for breast cancer.

Knotts3

There was a small group of cancer survivors and their families, along with Brenda Song (whom we did not know at the time).  We were led to Supreme Scream where we were supposed to scream and let out all of our anxieties at the top.

You can very briefly see me in the pink shirt on the left in the beginning of the video.  I did not realize that her connection to the cause is so personal until watching this.

Knotts4

There was a nice catered breakfast.

We had been on this ride before, and it is fun!  I was glad there weren’t cameras filming our reactions, though.

We were also surprised to find out that we were able to stay in the park for the rest of the day.  Our schedule was pretty packed, and my sister was watching the kids, so we just went on a few rides.  We were able to go on Xcelerator, which is just right next to Supreme Scream.  This was the one ride that D and I had never been on before.  It was so nice to just walk on the ride.  It was CRAZY fast–way scarier than Supreme Scream.  I basically had a headache for the rest of the morning.  We also went on Ghost Rider, which is always fun.  It was a fun date morning!

Legoland Annual Passes

Costco is having a pretty good deal for LEGOLAND annual passes.  Since the last time we went was about five years ago, and n did not even remember going, we decided to take the plunge.  We had a random Friday off for teacher planning day last month, so it was not crowded at all.

P1050837

P1050825

Our first ride was the Ninjago ride.  This Ninjago themed area of the park was not there the last time we went.  I am kind of curious as to how the Asian food is at the restaurant here.

P1050826

This ride was pretty fun, but it makes your arms tired.  It is a Toy-Story type ride in that you are shooting at targets, but you just use your hand, not a gun.

P1050829

We were able to go on rides that the kids were not tall enough for last time.

P1050830

We had the apple fries again, but I felt a little cheated by the small portion.

P1050833

I believe this is the Star Wars character n was for Halloween.

n appreciated the little details in the Star Wars land.

I really liked this RV camping scene in Miniland.
