Staycation at Sheraton Universal Studios

The nice thing about staying overnight when visiting a theme park is the ability to take a break at the hotel room to recharge. We made reservations at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, conveniently located about five minutes from Universal Studios. From the outside, the hotel did not look too impressive. They were doing some construction, so maybe they will be working on a facelift.

The interiors and the room itself were quite nice, minus the odd odor that greeted us every time we got off the elevator.

Somehow, D has maintained his Platinum status at Marriott, so we had access to the Club Lounge. We filled up on the evening appetizers (pizza bites, cheese and crackers, veggies, etc.) so that we would not have to buy a full dinner!

Waiting in the lobby for the shuttle to take us back to Universal Studios.

At nighttime, Universal City Walk felt like a PG version of Las Vegas!

Boba for the birthday girl!

We splurged on a large boba drink from Mini Monster. Thankfully, security let us bring in the empty glass jar (I didn’t think about it until after I had already bought the drink). I am not sure if that is standard protocol, or we just got lucky. The mason jar says California, and does make a nice souvenir!

Proof that I was there too!
Just chillin’ with Frosty

The periodic snowfall in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter added even more magic to the ambience.

The lighting of Hogwarts Castle was pretty spectacular! Our viewpoint from the stand where they sell Pumpkin Juice was nice because it was not too crowded.

We were also able to catch one of the Whoville Christmas tree lightings. What a fun way to start off our winter break and celebrate k’s birthday!

Before checking into our hotel room, we made a stop at Whoville to see the decorations. We also caught a performance by the Whoville Singers.

Visiting Universal Studios During Christmas, Part I

We kicked off our Winter Break at Universal Studios.  It also happened to be k’s 12th birthday, so we made it a mini staycation.  A few months ago we bought the three day pass from Costco and went with my parents in October.  It was nice not feeling like we had to see everything in one day.

Harry Potter World was all dressed up for Christmas.  The Christmas scenes are some of my favorite in the movie, so it was nice to see it come to life.

All Aboard the Hogwarts Express!

Going down the massive escalators…

…and back up again.  D and the kids each walked up one of the adjacent flights of stairs for fun.  The only ride we went on in the Lower Lot was Transformers.  The kids were not up to doing The Mummy ride again!

Minion tree!

We ate lunch at The Three Broomsticks.  It was crowded, but the lines to order the food and seating system were quite efficient.

The namesake, “Three Broomsticks”.

D and I shared The Holiday Feast (turkey) and a chicken salad.  I was impressed with the brussel sprouts and the overall freshness of the food.

The kids shared Fish & Chips and Mac & Cheese.

I thought it would be more crowded, but I think some kids were still in school and others were busy preparing for Christmas.  The Christmas decorations really added to the magical feeling all around the park.

Start 2019 Off Right With Ellie Claire 365 Day Devotional Journals

As a Christian, it is important to set aside time everyday to be in God’s Word.  However, I know that the busyness of life can become an easy excuse to skip quiet times.  As 2019 quickly approaches, now is as good a time as ever to make spending time with God a priority.  These three 365-Day Devotional Journals are a wonderful way to start. All three of these journals include a page for each day of the year.  There is a passage, a short devotional, and several blank lines in which you can record your thoughts.

As the title indicates, Peace Begins With Me is a devotional journal that focuses on instilling inner peace through the pursuit of God.  Even the cover, (which is in my daughter’s favorite color), evokes a sense of calm.  Life’s circumstances often leave us feeling anything but peaceful.  However, being grounded in Scripture can provide us with us with hope and ease our anxieties.

The devotionals in Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus are intended to help the reader to trust Jesus with her life and not to become distracted by everything else that often gets in the way.  Each devotion begins with a line from a classic Christian song or hymn and includes a verse and prayer.  Just having this book out put the hymn “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” in my mind and I found myself humming it throughout the day.  Similarly, it is helpful to start your day off with Scripture so that you may be mindful of it even as you do other things.

Finally, The Earth Is the Lord’s and Everything In It serves as a reminder that God’s handiwork is all around us if we take the time to stop and appreciate it.  This would be a nice choice for the nature lover in your life.  Appreciating His creation draws us closer to Him and is something that we can do every day.

All of these Ellie Claire journals are beautifully bound and provide year-round inspiration, which is something we could all use!

Never Too Old To Experience Disney Magic: Disney On Ice Dare to Dream Review

Disclosure: I received tickets to this show to facilitate my review.  All opinions are my own.

Last night we had the opportunity to attend the opening night of “Dare to Dream”, the newest Disney on Ice show, at the Honda Center.

Moana is the newest addition to the Disney on Ice repertoire.  We were invited to some pre-show activities, including a craft where the kids decorated some Kakamora coconut pirates from Moana.

They turned out pretty cute!

We were also treated to a Polynesian dance performance.

It is always fun to watch performances like these.  Their energy is contagious!

Minnie and Mickey also made a special appearance and took pictures with us.

The show was divided into two halves, with an intermission in between.  My favorite performance from the first half was Beauty and the Beast.  “Be Our Guest” will always be one of my favorite Disney movie scenes.  The fun costumes and special effects really added to the skating and music.

The second half was comprised of scenes from Frozen and Moana.  Frozen seems like it was just made for an ice-skating production.  Moana was the crowd favorite, with a lot of the audience singing along.

Seeing all of the young kids in the audience made me regret that we had not taken the kids to see this show when they were younger.  However, I am glad that they were still able to experience and appreciate the Disney magic!

Tip: Bring a jacket, because the ice definitely makes it cold inside!

In Southern California, this show will be taking place at:

Honda Center, Anaheim (December 19-23, 2018)

Citizens Bank Arena, Ontario (December 26-30, 2018)

Long Beach Arena, Long Beach (January 3-6, 2019)

Make Understanding The Bible A Priority For 2019: 30 Days to Understanding the Bible Review + Giveaway #FlyBy

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

30 Days to Understanding the Bible is one of those books that I did not realize I needed until I started reading it.  The author, Max Anders, claims that if you read a chapter a day (roughly 15 minutes of reading), for 30 days, you will learn the story of the entire Bible.  This includes all the major men and women, all the major events, and all the major points of geography.  This claim immediately piqued my interest because even though I have been reading the Bible since I was a child, the breadth and scope of the Bible has always seemed intimidating and overwhelming to me.

I am a visual learner, but I feel like most of the Bible instruction I receive these days is audio (sermons, podcasts, etc.).  I do read a lot of books about Christian living, but they are usually topical in nature.  I have done Bible Study Fellowship, which provides in-depth study of certain books of the Bible.  However, I have been missing a comprehensive guide to the overall story of the Bible.  30 Days to Understanding the Bible is that guide.  I am not surprised that over 500,000 copies have been sold and that it is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary!

After reading just the first chapter, I could see that this book would be a valuable resource.  The way Anders breaks down concepts and organizes information in charts is extremely illuminating.  I also really like how there are self-tests at the end of each chapter to review and solidify the information in your head.  I am looking forward to going through this book for 30 days and gaining a better grasp of the Bible in its entirety!

I am pleased to announce that I am hosting a giveaway for a copy of 30 Days to Understanding the Bible.

Host a Holiday Game Night With Harry Potter Games: Review + Giveaway

Disclosure: I received these games in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.  We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

I have been a Harry Potter fan since the first book came out.  Both the books and the movies do such a fantastic job of creating a magical world where anything seems possible.  We also recently had the opportunity to visit Harry Potter World at Universal Studios, which really brought Hogwarts and Diagon Alley to life.  Now we have the opportunity to experience the world of Harry Potter by playing two games: Harry Potter Triwizard Maze game and Harry Potter Magical Beasts board game.

The Harry Potter Triwizard Maze game is for 2-4 players, ages 5+.  If you know how to play Trouble, you will not have any “trouble” playing this game–ha!

Who doesn’t enjoy pressing the die popper?  This is a fun, quick game that the whole family can play together for game night.  The Harry Potter theme offers an original twist on a familiar game.

The Harry Potter Magical Beasts board game is a little more complex.  It is designed for 2-4 players, ages 8+.  In this game, you take on the role of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, or Ginny Weasley.  By moving your player around the board, you collect clues in order to capture the Magical Beasts that have broken loose at Hogwarts.

A unique feature of this game is the swinging game board that allows you to move from Hogwarts to the grounds outside and adds extra challenges.

I feel like December is such a fun month for board games, and I always try to add a family game night as one of our advent calendar activities.  We will definitely be including both of these games to our rotation of games!

I am pleased to announce that Pressman Toy will be sending one of my readers a copy of each of these Harry Potter games!

A Timely Resource: Sacred Holidays Review #SacredHolidays

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.  We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

The month or so between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a busy time.  There are always so many items on the to do list and events that fill up our calendars.  In Sacred Holidays, Less Chaos, More Jesus, Becky Kiser helps us gain perspective regarding how we celebrate holidays throughout the year.  Celebrations are obviously good things, but often we let all of the “stuff” surrounding the holidays overwhelm us.  Unfulfilled expectations often leave us frustrated and disappointed, which defeats the whole purpose of celebrating holidays in the first place.

Sacred Holidays is a very practical and interactive book that prompts the reader to think through why and how we celebrate throughout the year.  There is a chapter devoted to each of the following “holidays”: New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Lent & Easter, Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Advent & Christmas and Birthdays.  I appreciate that Kiser offers do-able ideas to make all of these holidays “more sacred”, but encourages us not to feel obligated or pressured to do them if they are not a fit for our family.  I can see myself using this book as a reference throughout the year, re-reading each of the holiday chapters a month or so ahead of time in order to be better prepared.  There are also chapters regarding common struggles, to be read as needed.  The topics include expectations, conflict, budgets, schedules, and grief.  This is one of my favorite new books that I have read this year, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants less chaos, more Jesus!

Three Bible Journaling Styles: Ellie Claire Art Journals Review

Dislcosure: I received a copy of these journals in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Have you ever tried Bible journaling?  When I see examples of how other people do it, I am always inspired.  However, I am somewhat at a loss as to how to do it myself.  Today I am reviewing three different Bible journaling books from Worthy Publishing that might help you along in the Bible journaling journey.

Each of these books has a distinct style and offers different journaling methods.

The Illustrated Word is an adult coloring journal.  This journal appeals to me because coloring is definitely something I can do!  There is something relaxing and meditative about coloring, and the intricately illustrated verses in this journal are really beautifully done.

Description: Create your own masterpiece with this journal that has forty glorious illustrations from ancient manuscripts that have been recreated as line drawings. Just as medieval monks brought Scripture to life through intricate inked illustrations in handwritten manuscripts hundreds of years ago, you can now create your own stunning keepsake that will be treasured for years to come.

Illuminate Your Story is a unique journal that teaches you how to create fancy lettering that will add an artistic flair to your writing.  This is another book full of pretty lettering and pictures.  Although it is not really my style, I can see how others might find it helpful and inspiring if they like the classic look.

Description: Use the almost-lost art of illuminating letters to enhance your writing, Bible journaling, or sermon note-taking. Rich illustrated manuscripts in the Museum of the Bible’s collection inspired these gorgeous letters. Easy to follow instructions, practice pages, and encouragements guide you through the creation of amazing start letters, flourishes, and more.

Out of the three journals, the Faith & Lettering Journal is my personal favorite.  It has a more modern feel and is a combination of lovely illustrated verses, blank pages and step-by-step lettering guides with space to practice.

Description: New from professional letterer Krystal Whitten! With guides, instructions, and tutorials, this is a fun and inspiring way to create beauty with words. It is the perfect place for journalers to practice Bible journaling, lettering quotes and verses, or decorating a page with original thoughts and plans. Exploring your God-given creativity has never been so rewarding.

Any one of these journals would make a wonderful gift this Christmas season.  Bible journaling is a special hobby because it is a way to record special memories, along with our walk with God.
