The Restoration Series: Jonathan’s Walk #TheRestorationSeries #FlyBy

“Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255:  “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”):  I received a sample of the product and compensation in exchange for this review and post.

Documentaries are one of my favorite genres of movies. The stories are so riveting because they are real. An example of such a riveting story is told in The Restoration Series: Jonathan’s Walk, a 5-part documentary film produced by Prison Fellowship. This documentary is about what happens to a man who has been in prison for fifteen years. Here is a preview clip:

More about the series:

For years, Jonathan has been in prison. As a result, he has missed milestone moments with his family. He wasn’t there for his daughter’s first day of school or a thousand little experiences with his wife and as a father, he is devastated to be separated from those he loves most.

Jonathan has been looking forward to his release from prison for over a decade. So many life events have been missed and he is now ready to be with his wife and kids again. Of course, this transition isn’t going to be easy. The odds are against him: with over half of prisoners returning to prison within two years, Jonathan is aware of the challenge set before him.

Still, he is determined to take the skills he has learned into the world outside of incarceration and stay there, helping build the community that he is part of for years to come.

Prison Fellowship presents The Restoration Series: Jonathan’s Walk, a 5-part documentary film series following one man as he re-enters his community after 15 years in prison. It demonstrates in imagery, powerful storytelling and social interaction what it means to be human and the shared need of all people to see communities restored.

Though America is home to only 4% of the world’s population, we house more than 20% of its prisoners. Recidivism–the tendency of a criminal to reoffend—is out of control. The Restoration Series tells the story of men and women who have experienced The Academy, a revolutionary in-prison program that is combatting incarceration and recidivism head on.

Just watching this short clip makes me want to root for Jonathan and others who may be in his same position. Crime and incarceration are complicated issues that have continued to plague our country. Recidivism is an important topic when thinking about prison reform. It is inspiring to see that a program like The Academy can bring hope and make such a difference in the lives of prisoners and their families.

Miso Soup Made Easy: Tsubi Soup Review + Giveaway

Disclosure: I received samples in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Last weekend I attended the Nourished Festival in Del Mar as one of their official bloggers. I went with my sisters and n, and we had fun sampling different gluten-free and allergen-free foods. One of our favorite finds was Tsubi Soup. These freeze-dried miso soup cubes are made in Japan with the highest natural ingredients. They are also vegan, gluten-free, non-gmo, and contain no MSG!

I have always enjoyed miso soup as an appetizer at Japanese restaurants, but I rarely have it at home. However, considering miso’s health benefits, I am thinking I should include it more in my regular diet. Miso is a complete protein in that it contains all of the essential amino acids. It is also packed with B vitamins and antioxidants, which are great for anti-aging and cell regeneration. Miso is also beneficial for digestive health since it contains probiotics from the fermentation process. It really is a “superfood”!

Miso on the go!

Making Tsubi Soup is so easy: Put a Tsubi Soup cube into a bowl or cup and add 6 oz. of boiling water. Stir and enjoy!

It really is amazing how the ingredients taste so fresh and the vegetables have a good consistency.

Tsubi Soup comes in four delicious flavors:

  • Classic Miso Soup (Eggplant, Ginger and Onions)
  • Miso Soup (Spinach, Crunchy Cabbage & Carrots)
  • White Miso Soup (Aosa Seaweed & Tofu)
  • Spicy Red Miso Soup (Japanese Mushrooms & Green Onions)

Tsubi Soup can be purchased at select retail stores, their online store, or Amazon.

Tsubi Soup has generously offered my readers the chance to win a box of each of their four flavors!

Living Sent: Love Where You Live Review

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Are you familiar with the concept of living sent? In the new book Love Where You Live, Shauna Pilgreen defines “living sent” as follows:

Living sent is recognizing God’s intimate involvement in our lives, whether we are in a new zip code or have been in the same one for years. Living sent aligns our uniqueness to His activity for the purpose of making Him visible to our community.

Pilgreen encourages her readers to really examine the place they call home and to realize that God has a purpose for them there. Most of the book focuses on her family’s move from a rural area to the heart of San Francisco. They made the move because they felt called for her pastor-husband to start a church in the City.

Having lived in San Francisco for three years as a law student, I could relate to many of the Pilgreen’s stories. The neighborhood I lived in was one of the roughest in the City. I would walk back to my apartment as fast as I could, try to avoid eye contact with strangers, and feel relieved to close the door behind me. Opening my window for fresh air meant subjecting myself to constant sirens and people randomly yelling on the streets. I really could not imagine myself living there with young kids like the author and her husband. However, what is really inspiring about Pilgreen’s story is how she intentionally chose to engage with and serve her challenging surroundings. Yes, their family suffered some unwanted consequences in putting themselves in such a vulnerable position. However, it is clear that the relationships and community that they built as a result far outweigh any setbacks.

Reading this book caused me to think about my current location. The neighborhood we live in now is non-threatening, and much quieter and calmer than a big city. Yet, how much have I made an effort to reach out to my neighbors and build relationships? If I am honest, I would say very little. I still have an individualistic mentality of wanting to feel safe in the privacy of my own home. I make friends with those I have regular interactions with, but I am afraid to take a risk to reach out to those who may be “different”, lonely or secluded. We have the opportunity to show God’s love every day, but how often do we make excuses and let those opportunities pass us by? Love Where You Live is filled with inspirational ideas for serving others and creating connections so that we can live out God’s purpose in our everyday lives.

Valentine’s Day Reading: 10 Choices Successful Couples Make

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it is natural for married couples to think about the health of their relationship with their spouse. In 10 Choices Successful Couples Make, Dr. Ron Welch outlines ten key choices that strengthen marriages. These choices include communicating well, forgiving, being unselfish and not taking your partner for granted. Dr. Welch explains each of the ten choices with real life (anonymous!) illustrations taken from his own counseling practice. He also offers concrete strategies that couples can implement in order to make the right choices. Love that lasts a lifetime is not something that just happens if you marry the “right” person. Successful relationships require commitment and at times, work.

I certainly felt convicted reading about how our attitudes and communication styles can make it difficult to have a thriving marriage. This book helps couples identify issues in their marriage before they become insurmountable. 10 Choices Successful Couples Make would benefit engaged couples and newlyweds, as well as those who have been married for decades!

Bone Suckin’ Good: Review + Giveaway

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

I am always searching for natural food products that make my mom life a little easier. I first heard about Bone Suckin’ Sauce when I received a sample in the most recent New Hope Blogger Box. The name immediately caught my attention. After trying their sauces, I would have to agree that the name is fitting!

The company started with a family recipe. The ingredient list in the original Bone Suckin’ Sauce includes: tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey, molasses, mustard, horseradish, lemon juice, onions, garlic, peppers, natural hickory smoke, natural spices and salt.

We tried out the Bone Suckin’ Sauce on oven-baked chicken wings on a recent school-night.

I found a recipe on Pinterest where you coat the chicken wings in a mixture of baking powder and salt before baking to make them crispy.

They were a hit! We really liked the sauce’s sweet/smoky/vinegary flavor. I am sure this would also be great for grilling on the barbecue once the weather starts to warm up.

Their product line also includes a variety of wing sauces, as well as seasoning blends.

Bone Suckin’ products can be purchased online or look for them at a store near you.

The kind folks at Bone Suckin’ Sauce have graciously offered my readers the chance to win a selection of their sauces and seasonings. The winner will receive the following awesome package:

  • 1 Bone Suckin’ Sauce 16 oz
  • 1 Bone Suckin’ Sauce, Hot 16 oz
  • 1 Bone Suckin’ Wing Sauce, Garlic & Honey 12.25 oz

A Big Bonus Box is included with an initial Essential Oils Recipe Box order. This is an amazing box of extras that make it easy to create a wide variety of recipes at home. The contents may vary, but the Big Bonus Box I received included:

  • Beeswax (to make balms)

Remember God Book Review

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

In Remember God, Annie F. Downs tells the story about one recent year of her life. As Downs recalls key life events, she takes her readers on a journey of doubt and struggle, as well as hope and trust in God. It took me a while to become accustomed to her narrative’s somewhat choppy style and abrupt transitions. However, maybe this was intentionally done to mirror how life can feel like sometimes. I would say this book is geared towards a female audience, although the act of “remembering God” is something that is vital for everyone.

Downs has written several books, but this was the first time I have read her writing. She is extremely open and honest with her readers about her relationship with God. She is not afraid to reveal her doubts, pain and disappointment. Her introspective writing style makes her relatable and her ability to discern God’s voice is inspiring. Downs also has a playful sense of humor that shines through even through difficult circumstances. The lessons Downs shares in Remember God are a valuable reminder that God is the author of our story and that we should not forget that He is in control.

Calling All Squishy Fans: Surprise Squishy Box Review + Giveaway

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Has the squishy frenzy hit your house yet? My kids never really got into the slime craze, but they do like their squishies. Squishies provide a satisfying tactile experience, but without the mess! Plus, they are so cute!

Squishy Kiosk is the online go-to source for all things squishy! They offer a wide variety of every kind of squishy imaginable. They also have a Surprise Squishy Box for those who like the element of surprise. Here is what came in the Surprise Squishy Box that I received:

My box contained ten squishies of different shapes and sizes.
1. This kawaii milk carton squishy was my favorite. I was a little disappointed that this one came somewhat dented. However, it is extremely squishy and so cute.
2. This soft serve ice cream cone charm would be a good one for a backpack.
3. This kawaii blue piece of toast is “charm”ing!
4. Here is another piece of bread, but I am not a big fan of the silly face. It is also a charm, but it is really too big to be practical as a decoration.
5. This would be perfect for any panda lovers out there.
6. This is a good size pineapple and it has nice realistic detail.
7. I am not sure if this is supposed to be a Chinese pork bun, but I like it!
8. This donut looks alarmingly real, but it is a little crumbly.
9. n claimed this emoji squishy charm for himself.
10. I like how colorful this rainbow ice cream squishy is. Again, it really is too big to clip onto a bag or purse, but it is satisfying to squish.

Be sure to check out Squishy Kiosk for all of your squishy needs! They ship worldwide and even offer free U.S. shipping with no minimum!
