Parenting Beyond the Rules, by Connie Albers, is a new book that provides parenting advice for those of us with teenagers or soon-to-be teenagers. What I appreciate about this book is that it recognizes that there is not one set of “rules” that will guarantee a great relationship between parents and teens. It seems obvious, but teens have different personalities, and therefore have different needs. What works for one of your children may not work for the other. This book tackles different areas of parenting, chapter by chapter. These topics include the importance of listening, monitoring your words, tackling tough topics, squashing fear and staying engaged. There are a few questions at the end of each chapter so that readers can evaluate their own parenting techniques. This book also encourages parents to remember that there is a lot to celebrate during the teen years. We need to remember that our children will soon be adults, and it is our job to equip them for this important transition.

The Pilgrim’s Progress Is Coming This Easter: Review + Giveaway

Disclosure: I received samples in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own.

I had a chance to watch a preview of The Pilgrim’s Progress with my kids, and it is a good one! As I mentioned in my earlier post, I have never read the classic book, The Pilgrim’s Progress. I knew it was an allegory for one man’s journey through the Christian life, but that is about it. The fun part about watching this movie with my kids was seeing them make the connections for themselves. For some of the scenes and characters, the implications are quite obvious, but for others it may be a little more difficult for kids to decipher. I really appreciated how this movie provides a lot of opportunity for deeper discussions about the Christian faith. Watching this movie would be a wonderful way to celebrate the real meaning of Easter with your family. It could also be a way to start a conversation with a non-believer relative, friend or acquaintance.

*Please note that in my opinion, some scenes might be a little intense for younger children.

Watch the trailer:

Genre: drama/ animated
Rating: NR
Run time: 1:45

A Life of Lovely Review

I wish I would have been able to read A Life of Lovely about twenty years ago. Given that this book was published only this year, and the author, Annie F. Downs, is in her 30’s, I realize this is impossible. However, I think my 20 year old self would have really benefited from the advice Down gives to young women. The subtitle, “The Young Woman’s Guide to Collecting the Moments That Matter” shows the reader how God can be found in both the extraordinary and ordinary moments of life. Downs has a gift for seeing and hearing God and showing others how to do the same. Even though this book is directed at “young women”, I also found it interesting and inspirational.

The book is divided into three sections:

  • When Lovely Is Lost
  • Collecting Lovely
  • When I Found Lovely

Throughout these different sections, Downs shares personal stories from her life. She is not afraid to be open and honest with her readers about her fears and doubts as well as her triumphs. Because Downs’ journey to find “lovely” is based on Biblical truths, it is a journey to which we should all aspire.

Open Door Living Review

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Does your home have an “open door” policy? What I mean is, do you regularly invite people over and practice hospitality? In Open-Door Living, Jen Schmidt gives practical tips on how to share the gift of hospitality with those around you.

Hospitality is not something that comes easy for me and I know that I am not alone in this. Schmidt breaks down hospitality into four parts:

  • Food
  • Cleaning
  • Atmosphere
  • Connection

Schmidt challenges the reader to think about which of these aspects of hospitality are easier and which are more difficult. For me, I would honestly say it is a combination of all four! This book offers simple recipes, cleaning tips, ways to make your home feel cozy, and conversation starters. As a Christian author, Schmidt emphasizes the reason why we should practice hospitality. The point is not to impress others, but to serve others and point them to Christ.

I really liked this quote from the book:

Our homes–now matter how imperfect–are the most likely location for changing the world around us.

I would recommend Open-Door Living to any person who needs some encouragement regarding how to open their doors so that they may be a blessing to others.

Sledding at White Sands National Monument

Did you know you can go sledding down the sand dunes at White Sands National Monument?

The gift shop sells sand disks, along with small blocks of wax. Note you can buy either new or used disks, and that you can also sell the disks back for a refund after you are done using them.

We were hoping to buy a used Sand Disk, but they were all out so we ended up with a new one.

The park is not that big, so we just drove around and found what looked like a good spot for sledding.

The parking lots had a lot of these picnic tables with wind shelters if you want to bring food.

It was so much fun sledding down the dunes, but it was not easy climbing back up! It was a good workout after sitting in the car for so long. The gift shop employee recommended putting the wax on the back of the sled every other time to make it slide easier.

Nice form!
Sand Angel!
The white sand really looked like snow!
Superman
The gypsum sand was cool to the touch and so fine.

If you are within the vicinity of Las Cruces, New Mexico, I would definitely recommend making a stop at White Sands National Monument.

Disclosure: I received these games in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Goliath Games has a wide variety of games that are fun for kids of all ages, as well as adults. We had the opportunity to try out three of their games: Word Search, Googly Eyes and Build Or Boom.

Word Search

As a word game fan, Word Search is right up my alley. The special circular board reveals the word that everyone needs to find and the person who finds it puts colored disks on top of the board to mark it. This is a great games for kids and parents (or grandparents!) to play together. It is for 2-4 players, ages 7 and up.

Googly Eyes

Googly Eyes is a drawing game with the addition of goofy glasses that distort your vision. The space you land on the board determines whether you use the easy, medium or hard lenses in the glasses. The glasses definitely make drawing a challenge! This game is for 4-16 players, ages 7 and up.

Build or Boom

Build or Boom is a fun game for kids who like to build (and destroy!) It is a race to see who can replicate the structure and then squeeze the air hose to knock over the opponent’s structure first. This game is for 2 players, ages 4 and up.

All of these games are sure to keep your kids entertained. Plus, playing games like these is a fun way to develop important social skills. Enter below to win Googly Eyes, Word Search AND Build or Boom for yourself! Be sure to also enter the other #HoppyEaster blogger giveaways below!

Spring Reading: A Drop of Hope Review #ADropofHope #SpreadHope

I have enjoyed reading Scholastic books since I was a child. Now that I have my own school-age children, I am excited to pass down the joy of reading. A Drop of Hope, by Keith Calabrese, is a new Scholastic release that will show kids how small acts of kindness can spark hope in the community around them.

My kids and I are currently enjoying this book as a read aloud. It is not always easy to find time to read together before bedtime anymore, but it was nice to bring this book along during our spring break road trip. The wide array of characters and perspectives keep the reader’s mind engaged. As a mom of both a girl and a boy, I appreciate that the storyline appeals to both genders. Although the book is recommended for ages 8-12, I would personally recommend it for ages 10 and up as the main characters are in sixth grade and dealing with the issues that come with that age. The storyline is intriguing, and I would not be surprised if this book is eventually made into a movie. In a world where it seems that hope in humanity is increasingly difficult to come by, A Drop of Hope shows that hope can appear even in the most unlikely circumstances.

Cheap Eats in Tuscon + Las Cruces

We spent the first night of our spring break road trip in Tuscon, Arizona. After resting in our hotel room for a bit, we headed out to grab some dinner.

We decided to try BK Tacos so that we could compare their Sonoran Hot Dogs to the ones we had at El Guero Canelo the last time we were in Tuscon.

It is difficult to compare a dish to a memory of another dish, but I feel like I preferred the Sonoran Hot Dog at El Guero Canelo (even though BK Tacos came out on top on The Food Network’s Food Wars show). However, k and I both enjoyed the chicken caramelo (quesadilla) and D liked his carne asada torta. Also, BK definitely wins in the ambience department.

Our next stop was Juice N Fruit Raspados, which was just a few minutes away.

I knew that we wanted to try the raspados, but we debated whether to split two mediums or two larges between the four of us. The raspados are made of layers of fruity syrup with chunks of fruit, shaved ice and optional vanilla ice cream and condensed milk.

Better than a birthday cake!

We ended up ordering a large strawberry raspado and a large mango raspado. Good thing too, since we were fighting over the last bites–ha! I would also highly recommend going for the ice cream and condensed milk for just a little over a dollar extra. Totally worth it! Now we need to find a local place that serves raspados like these.

Free breakfast at the hotel was okay…We continued our drive to Las Cruces, New Mexico. There we stopped at Bosa Donuts.

I had read good things about their brisket burritos and apple fritters (kind of an odd combination, right?). Alas, they were out of apple fritters by lunchtime, but we did order a couple of brisket burritos.

This may not be the most appetizing picture, but I wanted to show you the inside. It was chock-full of tasty brisket. The kids loved it!

To top it all off, we made a stop at Whataburger. We saw this regional chain everywhere during our trip, so D had to try it.

We ordered a green chile hamburger, since we were in New Mexico, after all. It was a tad too salty for my taste, but D liked the chopped green chile. We also shared a chocolate shake (that’s allowed when you’re on vacation!). Tummies full, we continued our drive to White Sands National Monument.

In Search of the Superbloom in Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve

It has been a while since I have done a vacation post. Well, last week we went on a road trip with stops in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas during spring break. That means I have a lot to share!

We left early in the morning on what was coincidentally n’s 10th birthday! Our first stop was Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve because I had heard you could see some Superbloom action there.

We arrived before 8:00 a.m., and the parking lot was pretty empty. Nothing like the crowds in Lake Elsinore!

There is a small visitor’s center, but we did not go inside. There was a friendly volunteer/docent who directed us on the main path to McCallum Pond. He told us that if we went just past the pond, we would see a lot of flowers (toward Moon Country).

At the beginning of the trail there was a boardwalk. k noted there was a small placard showing that it was an Eagle Scout project–nice!

I have never seen such massive palm trees!

During our hike, we came across this small patch of flowers. I could not believe how they look like a bouquet that was put together by a florist!

McCallum Pond is where the palm trees are, off in the distance.

McCallum Pond

We continued on the path as directed and found the Superbloom!

Happy birthday, n!
Not sure why D is doing the tough guy pose.

I was not planning on hiking as much as we did, but it was good for us since we were about to spend another six or so hours in the car.

On our way back to the 10 freeway, we drove by this amazing field of flowers and I had to ask D to stop so I could take a picture. Superbloom 2019 is for real!

We continued our drive along 10-E. It was much more picturesque than usual thanks to the flowers that were blooming along the highway. We also found ourselves in the midst of the Painted Lady butterfly migration. Several smashed right against our car as we were driving, leaving bright yellow stains on our windshield and wings in our grill–yuck. Soon we would arrive in Tuscon for the first night of our road trip…

Mozaics Chips Are A Must Try Snack!

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

In my continuing quest to find healthier snacks, I want to share my newest find: Mozaics Chips. I first saw them at the Nourished Festival and then again at Expo West. Mozaics Chips are organic popped veggie chips with green & yellow peas as the #1 ingredient. In fact the entire ingredient list is very simple and wholesome. For example, the Original Sea Salt flavor contains: organic peas, organic potato flour, organic rice flour, organic black beans, organic extra virgin olive oil, and sea salt. A 1 oz. serving (23 chips) contains 110 calories, 3 grams of fat, 4 grams of dietary fiber and 0 grams of sugar. They are also produced in a peanut & tree nut-free facility. **Please remember that it is important to review the product packaging and labels for yourself before consuming.** They also come in Sour Cream & Onion, BBQ, Cheddar, and Salsa flavors–yum!

Healthy Snackin’ On The Road!

We took a bag of Mozaics on our seven day spring break road trip last week and they were a big hit with my family. We all liked the light and crispy texture with just the right amount of olive oil and salt. They were a great alternative to snacking on potato chips.
