Grand Opening of Orchard Hills

New upscale neighborhoods seems to be popping up all around us.  We like to check them out and score some free food in the process.  This past Saturday was probably the biggest event we have been to yet: Orchard Hills in Irvine.  The key to going to these events is to arrive early, like right when it starts, at the latest.

005

The models in this particular neighborhood were so spread out that there was off-site parking and two different shuttle routes.

037

This was probably the nicest bus I ever been on.  The kids enjoyed the ride too.

020

It is always fun to check out the most expensive homes.  In this case, it was the “Trevi” models, starting at “the low 2 millions”—haha.

019

Model 2 was the most impressive.  Here are the kids checking out the crazy wine cellar.

Baseball caps that sport the “New Homes” logo kept the sun out of their eyes.

009

Everyone needs a bocce ball court, right?

008

Now, onto to the food.

023022

The majority of people checking out the homes were Asian, so there was orange chicken and spring rolls representin’.  (The spring rolls were from a Japanese restaurant, which did not really make sense).

There were also bean and cheese burritos from La Sirena Grill.  Unfortunately, the burritos were a very poor representation of their food.  We’ve eaten there in the past and been really impressed, but the burritos that day had crunchy, undercooked beans.  Taco Bell/Del Taco bean and cheese burritos taste better, sorry to say.

027

We were able to try to flavors of Nekter juice, which some of D’s co-workers are a fan of.  The flavors were a little too “out there” for us.  We thought the kids would like the strawberry lemonade, but there was cayenne pepper in it!   This station also had hummus and pita bread from Zov’s.

031

We saw other people holding coffee drinks, which is when we realized that the individual builders also had their own refreshment stations!  We ended up taking home various canned drinks, bottles of water, mini pies, biscotti, and popcorn from Popcornopolis.

034

We unexpectedly ran into our cute neighbors.

035

The kids’ favorite was the mango frozen yogurt from Pinkberry with fresh mango, strawberries and blueberries.

029

There was an orchestral group that played contemporary music, such as Journey.

028

There were also activities for the kids, including decorating bird houses.

030

In all, we spent almost three and a half hours there, which is crazy.  We’ll have to go back another time to look at more of the homes.

k’s 1st Grade Open House

The school year is slowly winding down.  Last week, k had her Open House.  She was very excited to show us all of her classroom projects.  It was also nice that my parents were able to come along too.  The Open House felt kind of chaotic because it was SO crowded in her classroom.  I guess that means that there was a good turn out, which is a good thing.

028

This picture was taken in the very beginning, before all of the parents arrived.

029

k’s silhouette is in the upper left corner.

031

One of k’s projects required an ipad and app to scan a QR code.  Hi-tech!

033032

Afterward, we ducked into a second grade classroom to see what lies ahead, as well as a kindergarten classroom to give n a preview.  Can’t believe we’ll have two in school come September!

Food @ Tahquitz Pines

It was nice not having to plan meals, cook, and clean up for a couple of days.  The food was better than we expected, and always served with a smile.

010

The first night was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, cornbread, and a berry cheesecake dessert.

018

Sunday breakfast was certainly filling: french toast, country potatoes, eggs, and sausage.  I’m not sure if the berries were meant for the french toast, but they went well together.  There was also an assortment of cereals that I usually do not buy, so the kids were excited to try them out.

020

Lunch was beef taquitos (not really, but I cannot remember what they called them), beans, rice, salad, and a strawberry churro.  This was k’s favorite meal, but it was a little spicy for n.

023

Pork tenderloin, potato medley, mixed vegetables, salad, and roll plus cheesecake (not pictured).  This was our least favorite, mainly because the pork was so plain.  I dressed mine up with homemade tonkatsu sauce—ketchup + A1.  We were supposed to have a pie social after the evening session, but there was a mix-up, so we ended up with vanilla ice cream instead.

024

Last breakfast: biscuit with gravy, country potatoes, eggs, bacon and fruit.

Our last lunch was turkey burgers, salad, chips and a turtle brownie, of which I failed to take a picture.  We ate with the kids about half the time, and the other half they ate with other kids at their own table.  It is hard to believe that they are at an age where that is possible!  Seeing all the younger families with booster seats and baby food made me remember how difficult mealtime used to be.

All-Church Retreat: Tahquitz Pines

Over Memorial Day weekend, we went to Idyllwild to attend our church’s retreat.  This was the first all church retreat we have had in eleven years!  The retreat started after lunch on Saturday.  We ate a picnic lunch at the nearby Idyllwild Nature Center.  They were having a family event which included some crafts, booths, and hikes.

001

002

We decided to do the guided nature walk, which was supposed to be “only 20 minutes”.  Well, it ended up being more like 45 minutes, but I must say it was quite informative.

005004003

Our tour guide was quite knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics.

006

The “Jay Leno” rock.

011

Afterward we drove to Tahquitz Pines Conference Center.  This place has been around for a while, but the grounds are well-kept.

007

We checked into our room, and the kids were thrilled to find a bunk bed.  We let the kids play on the upper bunk, but n slept on the bottom bunk and k slept on the cot.

009

008

The private bathroom was very spacious.  (Toilet and shower were across from these sinks).  We had a room adjoining to family friends, so the kids had lots of fun going back and forth.

027

This is the auditorium where we listened to our gifted speaker, Pastor Wayne Ogimachi.

026

Meanwhile, the kids were kept busy in a separate building.  There was also an upstairs.

019017015

There were some high swings!

013012

There was also a pool, but the water was really cold even though it was warm outside.  Overall, we had a really good time with our family, as well as our church family.  Tomorrow I will document the food.  Winking smile

Getty Center With Kids

035

After lunch, we fought some mid-day L.A. traffic to go to the Getty Center.  We tried to excite the kids by telling them about the tram ride that you take from the parking lot to the museum.

036

Looks like they’re having fun.

038063

Since we arrived mid-day, there were no iPods to check out, much to the disappointment of k and n.

041040039

052051050049

I think the garden may be my favorite part of the museum.  It was also nice to experience more mild weather after our epically hot weather the week before.

056061058

055

It was pretty crowded, as you can see…

054053

These ladybug-like flowers caught our eye.

062

This is what we looked/felt like by the end of our day.  We only made it through two of the four wings.  Going to both the Villa and the Center in one day is a lot, especially with young kids.  On the tram ride home, the pre-recorded narrator said something like “we hope that you are leaving the Getty Center recharged”.  Drained would have probably been a better word, especially after D valiantly drove us home in more traffic.  D and I decided we should return every five years with the kids, which would mean two more times before k graduates from high school.  It will be interesting to see how their perspectives/experiences change.

Getty Villa & Bay Cities Italian Deli

Going to the Getty Villa has been on our “to-do” list for a while.  Neither D nor I had ever been, although we had visited the Getty Center pre-kids.  Since they offer a deal where you can park at the Villa for $15 and park at the Getty Center for free if you visit the same day, we ambitiously decided to visit both.

005
There was some sort of Corvette convention in the parking lot.  Smile

006

012

We checked out iPod Touches for a free audio tour.  This was a big hit with the kids.

009

We briefly visited the “Family Forum”, which had some activities for the kids.  n’s shadow cracks me up.

011

Of course, D had to get in on the action too.

019015

030027023021020

The grounds were beautiful and there was a lot of Greek art and architecture.

For lunch we ate at Bay Cities Italian Deli in Santa Monica.  We ordered one Eggplant Parmesan and one Godmother sandwich.

034033

The bread was super yum—loved the bubbly crust.  The ordering system is kind of confusing.  Someone pointed D to the pre-made Godmother sandwiches in the back, which saved him waiting in a take-a-number line.  I had to wait for the eggplant sandwich in a separate line by the door, though.  A bit chaotic, but worth it, and we even found a shady table in front.  Two sandwiches were definitely enough for this family.

Fun Freebies

D often receives things at work and brings them home to share.  For example, I do not think we will need to buy another ballpoint pen, ever.  Last week he went to an alternative energy expo and brought home whoopie cushions that advertise Natural Gas.Winking smile The kids certainly had fun with those, as they had never seen one before.  He also brought home duck calls, which were another hit.

001

Yesterday, D brought home this cake pop that was too cute not to share.  It was in honor of one of his co-workers who is expecting a baby girl.  Congratulations James!

A Lovely Mother’s Day Weekend

019016

D was able to zip around in an MX-5 over the weekend.  He even took the kids for a test drive, but only around our neighborhood.

We hosted our small group on Friday night.  On Saturday, two of my college roommates stopped by for a short visit.  It is always fun catching up with them.

021

On Sunday we had breakfast at church (pancakes, eggs, fried rice and shoyu sausages + jook for those who want it).  After church we hosted a joint celebration for Mother’s Day and my dad’s birthday.  D christened our bbq that we received last year.

022

We sang happy birthday to my dad and ate this cake from Costco, which should be called “Death by Chocolate”.

023

024

One of my Mother’s Day gifts was a Grand Canyon puzzle.  Hopefully there are no missing pieces!

Last Tanaka Farms Strawberry Tour

I feel like n has been having a lot of “lasts” since he will be going to Kindergarten in September : last BSF a couple of weeks ago, last library storytime today, and last MnM meeting on Friday.  Last Friday we went on what will probably be our last Tanaka Farms strawberry tour after many years of going with our MnM group.

002

006005

The berries were somewhat better than last year, I believe.

011004

The berries were especially good where it was all muddy, which lured some pickers into the mud! (Not n, though. Winking smile).

013

Picture time can be chaotic with such a large group!

Organizing With Daiso Products

001

This was the sorry state of our homeschool/homework desk.  Fed up, I decided to go to Daiso for some organization help.  While we had plastic boxes for colored pencils, crayons and markers, they were not working because no one wanted to put the lids back on.  Plus, they took up too much room on the table.

002

My purchases consisted of the two trays on the left and four stackable boxes—all $1.50 each!  Fingers crossed that this system will work better and this space will not return to the chaos pictured above.
