OC Foodie Fest–Without Pictures :(

On Saturday we went to the OC Foodie Fest. The non-VIPs were let in at 11:30, but we arrived at 10:30, mostly because we wanted to get out of the house. It turned out to be a good move, because there was already a line to get in. We parked in adjacent lot for $5 (instead of the $15 at the Honda Center) and got some exercise in the process. Unfortunately, I am without a camera (I’ve broken two in the past six months…I know, I know) so I was unable to be like all of the other foodies and take pictures of everything we ate.

There were 49 food trucks, but we were only able to sample from six of them. Here is what we had:

1. Nom Nom Truck–D made a beeline for this truck as soon as we were let in, because we knew it would be popular due to its success on the Food Truck Race show on the Food Network. He ordered the lemongrass chicken banh mi. This was definitely k’s favorite. We were fighting over the last few bites! A local cable tv show asked if they could tape k eating because they wanted to show the audience that kids are welcome to these types of events too. Too bad we’ll probably never see it on air.

2. Crepes Bonaparte–Spicy Apple Bottoms Crepe (cooked cinnamon apples, caramel, and whipped cream). Another Food Truck Race contestant, although we were sad to say good-bye to them this week. It was OK, but we couldn’t try their more creative crepes because we were afraid the pesto would have nuts, and we had to avoid the nutella, etc. for the kids. n liked the apples, though.

3. Don Chow Tacos–Taco trio (Kung Pao Chicken, Chinese BBQ Pork and Ultimate LA taco (carne asada sprinkled with cilantro, salsa, bacon and grilled onions)). Saw this one on Triple D. The Chinese BBQ pork was the best…a little sweet. This trio was very filling!

4. The Shrimp Guys–Coconut lime shrimp with rice and luau punch. I thought it was good, but the portion was pretty small. If I ever go back to Oahu, I’m definitely going to go to a shrimp truck on the North Shore, which this truck is based on. I’m glad we got there early because this line was really long later in the day.

5. Fry Smith–Rajas fries (Fire-roasted poblano chiles, carmelized onions and shawarma-marinated steak with jack cheese). The steak on these fries was pretty high quality, but we were too full by this point to fully appreciate them. They also had kim chi fries with pork which I might have tried had we gone sans kids.

6. Coolhaus–Roasted pear with nutmeg ice cream between two snickerdoodle cookies. Granted, this was a tiny truck, but the amount of waiting time between giving your order and picking up the sandwich was pretty ridiculous. I mean, how long does it take to put a scoop of ice cream between two cookies? However, the ice cream tasted very “fresh” and was definitely something I had never tried before. (Wasn’t in the mood for the brown sugar bacon flavor!) It also comes in an edible paper wrapper which n took a bite of. I think this woman was looking at him weird since she probably didn’t know the wrapper was meant to be eaten.

Anyway, we walked around a bit more and then trekked back to the car. The morning had started out pretty cool (a nice relief from the week before), but by the time we left, around 1:30, it was definitely warming up. It was kinda fun hanging out with 8,500 fellow foodies, plus we saw a few people we know. Goodbye Summer!

The Best Egg Salad Sandwich

Last weekend we went to my second cousin’s wedding in Pasadena. Her reception was at the Westin, so we stayed overnight and made it a mini getaway.

For lunch we ate at Europane Bakery. We had the famed egg salad sandwich, as seen on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate”. I must it agree, it was the best egg salad sandwich I have ever had, but I hardly ever order egg salad. (Random fact: egg salad was one of my few pregnancy cravings). We also ordered the chicken sandwich and a caramel-sea salt macaron. Yum!

Bouncy Birthday

Loving the cooler temperatures this weekend. Saturday we went to a birthday party at a park .4 of a mile from our house, so we decided to walk. We took the wagon; k walked there and rode back (n rode both ways). The birthday girl, who is so sweet, turned 6. We went to the bounce house first thing, which was perfect since k gets intimidated when there’s other kids. It was pretty big, and k had fun. She even went down the slide once the birthday girl showed her how it is done. For lunch there were six foot Subway sandwiches and cupcakes for dessert. It was nice to enjoy some time outside in the shade, but we were really tired after walking back.

For dinner we went to Sushilicious with another dealperk coupon. Our favorite rolls were Little Miss Sunshine and Supercalifragi-(something, I can’t remember). We ordered a chicken teryiaki bento first thing, but it was taking a while. I reminded the waitress and she had forgotten to put in the order (hmm…not sure if their i-touches really served their purpose). Anyway, she was nice and gave us a free dessert. We chose tempura mango ice cream. We were also reminded why it is so difficult to take n out to eat. He is so squirmy and likes to throw utensils on the floor. He was charming the waitresses/waiters by constantly waving at them, but I’m sure they didn’t enjoy the cleanup from our huge mess.

This week will be busy…k’s first time at VBS!

BoardWalk Ice Cream Co.

Boardwalk Ice Cream
Since we had the day off on Monday, our adventure was to go to the Spectrum. I wanted to use the coupon I bought from www.dealperk.com for BoardWalk Ice Cream Co. The deal was $2 for 2 ice cream bars. The normal price is $3.75 each. They have vanilla ice cream bars, they dip them in your choice of dark or milk chocolate, and then you can have them rolled in unlimited toppings. D chose dark chocolate with oreo crumbles and I chose milk chocolate with coconut, waffle cone pieces and sprinkles. We were both careful not get anything with nuts so the kids could share with us. I guess the concept is based on the Balboa bar, which we’ve never had (we had the frozen banana). Anyway, is was very good, but you cannot help feel bad about eating it, at least I couldn’t. I also wanted k to ride on the ferris wheel, but it was closed for refurbishment. It is supposed to open up later in the summer. Boo.

hug
In other news, n has developed some new “tricks”, some good, some bad. Good: He likes to give k hugs. He loves to wave at people and point at babies and dogs. He holds up one finger when you ask him how old he is. Bad: He scratches our faces with both hands and thinks it is funny. He climbed out of his crib yesterday (it is now on the lowest notch…hopefully that will keep him in for a while longer). He likes to throw things (anything) off of the top of our stairs.

OC Kids Restaurant Week-Beachcomber Cafe

We have had a good 4th of July weekend so far. Yesterday we were able to meet our new nephew. (Haven’t asked my sister about posting his picture yet, so we’ll hold off on that). D & k were also able to go to the pool before dinner. k blew some bubbles in the water, and she is getting better at holding on to D and kicking.

Today we went to Crystal Cove for the Beachcomber Cafe’s OC Kid’s Restaurant Week. I looked on our blog, and the last time we went to Crystal Cove together was pre-kids, in 2006. A lot has changed since then, as the restaurant didn’t exist back then, and I remember the beach being pretty empty. And we have two kids now, that’s a big change too!

We parked in the Los Trancos parking lot, East of PCH. There is a Beachcomber bus for $1 each way per adult, but we decided to walk. It wasn’t too bad. You go through a tunnel with artwork, underneath PCH. Our 3.5 year old made it fine, and D carried n. So, the deal for Restaurant Week was at the Beachcomber Express, which is the takeout shack. It was $40 for 2 kids meals, 2 adult meals, 4 drinks, 2 beach chair rentals and 1 umbrella rental and voucher for the parking, which is usually $15 (ouch!). The Beachcomber normally validates the parking with a $15 purchase, so I would suggest buying $15 of food, since you would be getting it “free”. For the kids we ordered grilled cheese and a BBQ chicken wrap, and for us we ordered a kobe hamburger and grilled chicken caesar salad. D and I liked the hamburger the best (brioche bun, red onions, etc.). Surprisingly, k liked the salad (specifically the lettuce) the best. n ate some of the grilled chicken. They weren’t too into the kids meals, so D and I ended up eating a lot. The drink choices were just water, green tea or soda (I thought they should have had some sort of juice option, since it was KID’S restaurant week, but k and n seemed to enjoy the fancy water bottles). All in all, it was kind of expensive for what we got food-wise, but it was more the experience and beach atmosphere that made it worth it. We set up our towels, chairs, and umbrella and then they brought the food out to us on the beach. D chatted up this young family that was set up nearby because the dad was wearing a Cal hat. Turns out that he graduated a year before D (two years before me) and they live in Irvine. Anyway, we spent about 2.5 hours there, the weather was nice, and fun was had by all.

I tried calculating how much our outing would have cost without the family promotion, and I think it would be close to $80! That seems kind of outrageous to me. Even $40 was on the high side, but I guess we can consider it as a staycation. Aren’t we lucky that outings like this are less than 30 minutes away? Maybe we’ll try the actual restaurant during a regular Restaurant Week someday.

For dinner we went to my parent’s house and had the Summer Wellington that D’s dad won a couple of weeks back. We weren’t too impressed…not sure how anyone can be vegan. But, luckily my cousin who is vegetarian, came to dinner, so she was glad to take home the leftovers!

Kogi Date Night

I’m not sure of this, but I think our last date night was in March. That’s pretty sad. I’ve been wanting to try the Kogi truck for a long time, but it was never at a time/place that was convenient. However, Friday night it was in Irvine, so we dropped the kids off at the grandparents’ house and checked it out. It was supposed to arrive at 6:30 and we were there before 6. Since we didn’t see anyone in a line, we went into the K-1 indoor race track and looked around. Then we went back to our car to wait, but D soon noticed that there was a small group of people waiting in a corner of the parking lot. We got in line (we were instantly recognizable as noobies because we accidentally went to the front of the line, instead of the back). Soon there was a long line behind us as more people showed up. The truck came on time, but when it arrived, it parked pretty far away from the line! Everyone was kind of looking at each other, and I told D to get prepared to run, under my breath. But, some people behind us told the people in the front of the line that we should all just move together, and we all civilly moved closer to the truck. I had read in other places there is just a mad dash, but this is Orange County, I guess.

Kogi Truck
Anyway, D left the ordering up to me since I had done my research. We ordered 1 short rib taco, 1 spicy pork taco, 1 order of Kogi sliders (short rib meat, 2 per order) and 1 spicy pork burrito. Oh, and a piece of tres leches cake for dessert.

Once the truck set up, we got our food pretty quickly since we were only about 5 people back from the front of the line.
Kogi Goods
We ate in our car, which was kind of messy, but fun. The tacos definitely have more flavor, but the burrito is what will fill you up. My favorite was the sliders. Actually, that and the tres leches:
Kogi Tres Leches
Definitely not your traditional tres leches, it had chocolate cake, with a crunch peanut brittle top, condensed milk on the bottom and tapioca in the middle! There was also a hint of cinnamon in there too. Very interesting. Our dinner came out to just under $20 (we brought sodas/drinks from home :)). I like this food truck craze.

Berkeley Dog

I credit living in the Bay Area for seven years for turning me into a foodie. As in all college towns, there are certain institutions that every student must visit. One of these places in Berkeley is Top Dog.

Last week I read that there was a place called “Berkeley Dog” that was opening in Mission Viejo. Although not officially affiliated with Top Dog, it is endorsed by, and supplied by the same people as Top Dog. They were giving away free hot dogs on Saturday, so we decided to try it. D and n wore their Cal shirts to show our school spirit. When we arrived, D chatted it up with a guy who seemed like the owner/manager, who is a Cal alum, and he gave D a card for a free sausage on another visit. I think we arrived at a good time (around 4:30) since there was no line and we were able to find a seat. I guess earlier in the day the line was out the door.

My full review can be found here.

Good Eats

When D’s brother and sister came down to visit, they noted that there seemed to be lots of chain restaurants. That’s true, but there are also a lot of independent ethnic eateries…you just have to be on the look out for them.

A couple of weekends ago we went to Kaya, a Korean restaurant. We had a coupon for their dol sot bimbimbap (go to www.cheapirvine.com our new “secret source”). We were reminded why we usually don’t go to Korean restaurants with the kids–several small bowls of banchan + scorching hot stone bowls = constant supervision of squirmy kids.

Across the way we decided to stop in a Persian bakery called Assal Pastry. They sell pastries for $10/lb. The pastries were yummy, but why can’t they label them to make it easier for the customer to order? I sensed the employee was getting a bit frustrated with our descriptions when we were trying to order “Um, the one with chocolate and in the shape of a triangle?” k picked the strawberry cake when we got home and declared she liked it better than chocolate.

FYI: this assortment came out to about $8.50–it adds up!

Last weekend we ate at an Indian lunch buffet in Tustin called Haveli.
Haveli d + n
Haveli
k liked the garlic naan and tandoori chicken. D and I enjoyed the fiery hot chicken curry (and the naan, of course!) It was $6.99/person with our coupon (the restaurant advertises a lot) and k didn’t have to pay, so that was nice. There weren’t many people, but maybe because it was the weekend. We were quite full after that. (D had run 20 miles that morning, so he had reason to eat a lot.)

On Sunday we celebrated my sister’s birthday. Her dessert request was S’mores cupcakes, and my mom delivered:

We also had a DiGiorno party, but that will be another post.

D and I went to Agora Churrascaria for our annual New Year’s Eve Eve date. We skipped breakfast in order to save our appetites for lunch. D especially enjoyed the bacon wrapped filet mignon and Brazillian sirloin. The last time we had this type of meal was five years ago, at Greenfield in Long Beach. It will probably be another five years before we go again…it is definitely not something you want to do on a regular basis.

That night D’s friend from b-school came over for dinner. He is from New Jersey, and was visiting relatives in So. Cal. We were suprised that k warmed up pretty quickly to him.

We spent New Year’s Eve at home watching football, eating cheese fondue and sleeping on our new IKEA Manstad couch that folds out into a double bed. k, who usually sleeps at 7 p.m. stayed up until after 10 p.m. D, L, and k all slept on the couch comfortably.

New Year’s Day we watched the parade on t.v. and headed over to my parents’ house. We had ribs, chicken wings, spam musubi, wontons, CA crunch rolls and sukiyaki for dinner. I traditionally try to do something crafty on New Year’s day, and this year I made some earrings referencing Bead Simple which I received as a Christmas present. We also had more fun playing Wii, and k got in on the action!

Rancho Santa Margarita Christmas Light Display

Tonight we trekked down the 241 toll road ($1.50 each way) to see the Christmas light displays on a cul-de-sac in RSM anchored by 20 El Corzo. We parked our car nearby and walked around from house to house and k had a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the attention to detail that a lot of the displays showed. The thought and work that this group of neighbors put into their displays is quite evident. We went early, just after 5 p.m., so not all of the lights were on yet. However, I think everyone had their lights on by 5:20, so we were able to see everything lit up, without all of the crowds.

Seriously, where do they keep all of these decorations when they are not on display?? This is the anchor house, which I believe started it all. They also had music piped through outdoor speakers.

n seemed quite interested in everything, too!

It was kind of interesting that in the midst of all of the santas, snowmen, reindeer, etc., there was a tasteful nativity scene at one of the homes. A nice reminder of the real reason for our celebration.

Afterward we went down Portola looking for a place to eat. This is highly unlike us, as we usually know exactly where we want to eat and do research beforehand. However, we took a gamble and decided on La Sirena Grill. D had the carne asada burrito and I had the grilled vegetable quesadilla. A little pricey for a fast-casual joint, but we enjoyed it. Everything tasted fresh, and not greasy. I really liked the generous scoop of fresh guacamole that came with both of our dishes. Afterward we shared Golden Spoon underneath the heat lamps in the nice outdoor seating area of the shopping center. It felt nice and cozy, even in the middle of December!
