Bouncy Birthday Party

Last night I took k and n to a birthday party for our friend that is turning 5. It was held at a place that had a big bounce obstacle course, slide and ball room. Needless to say, k and n had lots o’ fun. Still waiting for n to get a little bit older, so I don’t have to go up the slide with him every time! (I was able to take these pictures by climbing up with n, then sliding down first.)

Hand-painting. k doesn’t like having her face painted, but the hands are OK in her book. n follows suit, of course.

n-4th of July

For 4th of July we went to Tustin High School for fireworks-viewing. Last year we were able to find parking on the street, but this year we had to park in the lot for $5. Unfortunately, the school is under construction, so we could not walk through the campus. The cheerleader taking our money cheerfully told us it was only a short five minute walk. Um, not really, especially with two little ones, blankets, food and beach chair. The viewing area seemed more crowded too. One person attributed it to the economy…everyone’s doing the staycation.

For dinner we had spam musubi, thai take-out and these patriotic rice krispie treats made by Zaza.

We sat closer to the exit/bathrooms, so weren’t able to hear the music very well. k seemed to enjoy the fireworks, although she was screaming during parts of the show. At first n was closing his eyes and covering his ears, but he was enjoying it by the end. n’s last word when D was tucking him to sleep was a whispered “boom”.

Korean-Japanese Wedding

Last Saturday we had the privilege of attending the wedding of one of my friends that I have known since junior high. My mom and I helped out with the guest book/gifts, so I didn’t get any pictures of the ceremony itself. It was a large wedding, which I guess is common for Korean weddings? The groom’s father surprised everyone by making some announcements in Korean, Japanese and English at the end! There was quite an impressive spread of Korean food for dinner.

They hired a balloon artist for the kids to keep them entertained, very thoughtful.

All the best to the newlywed couple. We’re sad you won’t be in OC anymore, but we’ll have to visit soon!

Wedding #1

The past two weekends we have attended weddings. I am so glad these two weddings were not on the same day, because I would have been so sad to miss either one. The first wedding, last week, was the primary reason for our trip to Nor Cal. We stayed at the hotel where the wedding/reception were at, so it was very convenient.

A Jet-Lagged Easter

D and I returned from our week long vacation in Japan yesterday afternoon. We took lots o’ pictures, so we will be making up for our recent lack of blogging soon.

Despite our tiredness, we made it to church for Easter Sunday. It was good to worship with our church family again!

After service k and n participated in the Easter egg hunt. Altogether, they participated in six hunts this year, so they’re old pros. 🙂

Two (For Real)

Happy birthday to our little n. (Not sure when I’ll stop calling him little). We are so grateful that he is in our lives. It’s funny to think that k doesn’t even remember life without him. He still has his sweet disposition, and is very forthcoming with his affection. He loves to copy k in everything she does. He is starting to express his opinions with more force, however, so we’ll see if the terrible 2’s live up to their name.

D was able to come home somewhat early for our family birthday dinner.

I took the kids upstairs into k’s room while D set up n’s present outside.
water table
A water table! The idea for this present came to me because n has become obssessed with bringing a stool (or chair, or whatever is closest) up to the sink, turning on the water, playing with the water, and leaving the water running. He and k had a good time with the table, but it will be better when the weather warms up a bit.

n’s shirt was pretty soaked by the end, so we took it off during our dessert time which featured chocolate pudding. (No cake since we have been finishing the cake from the weekend all week).

Valentine’s Day Eats

D and I celebrated Valentine’s Day early by going out for brunch at Old Vine Cafe yesterday. It is located in The Camp, which neither one of us had ever been to. I enjoyed the eclectic vibe and it was nice to eat outdoors under the heat lamp. The only thing I didn’t care for was that the tables were so close together (although I guess that is necessary since the restaurant is pretty small).

Of course, I did my research beforehand, so I decided on the Open-Faced (Fresh Biscuit, Spicy Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Chipotle Gravy with Potatoes) and steered D to the Omelet Espana (Sautéed Prosciutto, Artichoke Hearts, Red Bell Peppers, Shitake Mushrooms & Fresh Manchego Cheese). D’s came with toast, so he chose the house-made English muffin and kiwi preserves. We shared, and came away quite satisfied.

The brunch even made D’s list, bumping off Original Pancake House. :0

New Year’s Traditions

Back to New Year’s, which seems oh so long ago now. On December 30th, D and I followed our tradition of going out to eat by ourselves. We do this so we can still spend December 31st with the kids. They are always memorable meals (and we spend a little more than usual). Here’s as far back as I can remember:
2006: Didn’t go out due to our ten day old baby
2007: The Fish Company
2008: The Melting Pot
2009: Agorra Churrascaria
For 2010 we went to Cham Sut Gol for lunch…AYCE Korean BBQ for $13.99!

The service was good, they changed our grill about 3-4 times, I think. We didn’t care too much for the pork belly, but the beef, chicken, spicy pork and brisket were all good. The hot tofu soup that came with it was also excellent, better than BCD in my opinion. They also serve a large salad, rice paper wrappers and radish wrappers to make your own rolls with the meat. Plus, you can ask for rice (free!) which I learned from Yelp. Finally, there is AYCE Thrifty’s ice cream at the end. Needless to say, we were stuffed at the end of the meal. (We had skipped breakfast that morning!)

On New Year’s Eve we followed another tradition that we started last year: we all slept on our IKEA Manstad sofa-bed. Actually, last year, n was still in his crib, since he was only nine months old, so this was the first year that everyone slept on the same bed.

sleepover 2
I’m not quite sure why we find this fun, but it is. Wonder how long it will be before the kids need to sleep on the floor while we sleep on the couch. We stayed up for the NY ball drop and then lights were out by 9:30!

Citizenship Party

On Wednesday night we went to a party to celebrate our nephew’s U.S. citizenship. The theme was “circus”.

A couple of days later, when we were driving in the car, k said, out of the blue, “j’s party was very circus-y”. Why yes, it was.

Well, j and his parents went back to Japan today, so we won’t see them for a while. But, D and I need to start planning because we are going to be visiting them in the not too distant future!
